serious MIDI glitch

Hello,

This is about the 3rd time this has happened to me and it seems like a very serious problem that should be researched.

I like to use VDMSound to run Impulse Tracker and that's really all I use it for. I run WinXP and have an SBLive 5.1. After running IT with VDMS a few times, it causes whatever MIDI device currently selected as the default to fail completely. Attempts to initialise the MIDI device with any other program from that point on will either fail (error message) or result in silence. As far as I know, the only way to get the MIDI device working again is to reformat and reinstall Windows.

it usually happens to my Yamaha Y-XG50 SoftSynthesizer. Even a clean uninstall and reinstall does of the synth does nothing to fix it. I've also had this happen to my SBLive Synth (the one that uses soundfonts) and again, I had to reformat to fix it. Driver rollback, complete driver reinstall, removal of VDMS etc. all do nothing to fix it.

I've found that the best way to cause this glitch to happen is to let VDMS begin to startup in fullscreen mode, but to press the windows key halfway through so that it throws you to your desktop.

This problem irritates me because it basically disallows my computer from ever running whatever MIDI device happens to be my favourite at the time.

That's really foobar. What prolly happens is that the fact of switching back from full-screen confuses the hell out of Windows and/or the MIDI driver. Nothing to do, really, with VDMSound, but a pain nonetheless -- I don't understand why/how it would persist beyond a reboot, though. Try to dump the registry before and after (to a text file, using regedit "export"), and perform a diff.

Cheers,
V.

that sounds like a reasonable idea -- but i'll have to wait until the next reformat to try it.

if i ever get around to it, i'll be sure to post my findings.
