I'm curious as to what Slot A mobos people here have used and how well they worked. I never went with a Slot A system myself and have little experience with them.

Well when Slot A was state of the art a friend of mine and I bought a new pc. He chose a ASUS K7M and I bought a Gigabyte GA-7IXE. More recently I aquired a Gigabyte GA-7IX board. All boards proved to be quite solid.
The difference is the IX/IXE uses the Irongate, the K7M uses a VIA Southbridge, so the K7M can use higher DMA modes for the HDDs. This was not really important back then though.
The Irongate Chipset is said to have AGP stability problems at 2x because of noise on the AGP bus. Well I had a ELSA GF2 GTS running at 2x and barely noticed it. Maybe one blue screen a week. I was running Everquest mainly, so guess how long 3D-mode was running on average... 😉
Beside of this you need to trick a bit, cause the NVidia driver falls back to AGP 1x by default and you have to trick it to go back to 2x, with Powerstrip f.e.
You can equip the board with 3x 256 MB. You need specific memory timings to have sideband addressing enabled.
I have such a system running at the moment as transfer pc for my other old computers and noticed that USB could be quite picky sometimes. Usually this is fixed by simply dis- and reconnecting the device. Though might just be a driver problem. I didn't noticed it back then, but I had another config with Win2K.

Well, not much more to say. Put the components together and it runs. My impression is, that the boards are rather solid. We had a system running at university where the cpu-fan broke and noone noticed, because the system was still running. CPU was between 90 to 100 degrees C for weeks. We installed a new fan and the system is probably still running today.

ASUS K7M. I remember then ASUS seemed to sneak that board onto the market in a white box, non-descript way. People were thinking the bigger mobo makers would ignore AMD's Athlon as they had the K6 series. And some of them did for quite awhile.
