Does anyone have any tips on how I can play Doom2 in VDMsound using a 4 button gamepad? I've tried a gameport pad and a USB pad and can inly get 2 buttons to work.

So far in winXP with VDMSound, it's the only way I've gotten a pad to work in doom at all. Also the game's real choppy. Any tips Appreciated.

Doom-engine games don't run well under NT-based OSes such as Win2K/XP. I would highly, strongly, seriously suggest checking out some of the Windows ports of the Doom engine, such as Doomsday/jDoom and Doom Legacy.

edit: Oops, said "suck as" instead of "such as"

You would have to change the joystick mapping, either from LaunchPad (if using it - choose the single joystick etc. option) or from VDMS.INI (need VDMSound "Update 2" to be installed for joystick mappings to work).

Cheers,
V.

I'm using launchpad and the update. I used the single joystick option and only 2 buttons work. The other stick option makes the game not even run. Thanks for the quick response both of you.

Hey I edited the games "default.cfg" and set the buttons up from there and they work now! The game just runs REAL slow and sounds weird. Progress is good though! Thanks again.

Yep, the joystick part was fixable, but I don't think I've heard anyone report being able to fix the speed/sound problems. At the very least, the old Windoom port is worth checking out, as it resembles the original DOS version very closely.

Why do people insist on doing it the hard way (with the worst results)?

If you use a Windows port, most of them (if not all of them) will allow for custom controller setups like yours and perform much better in the process. I mean, you can walk using your hands instead of your feet, but it's not really a good idea is it?

And the Win9x port done by Id is an exact duplicate of the DOS version except that it allows for higher resolutions and other Win9x options.
