Hello dosbox people 😉

Heres my netbook: Packard Bell butterfly touch Win7 x64 SU4100 2gig Ram 4500MHD

Ok, ive got a problem with dosbox. When i just start my comp ,or when i restart, dosbox is really fast even with dosbox status windows not minimized, but when i close dosbox and restart it after, dosbox is extremely slow.
I tried all sort of trick to sort out this problem, like using high performance mode, or delaying hdd wake. That was not the solution.

Though i've found a fix to make it fast again, i just need to minimize dosbox status window in taskbar manually.
So i thought that status windows was the problem, and tried run dosbox with "noconsole", to hide it from start. With that command ,dosbox is again very slow.
So i really need to minimize dosbox status windows manually, to make dosbox fast. A bit boring, yeah but that works in this way.Maybe a compability problem with win7 64?
Any advice? Thx in advance.

Maybe a lower priority= would help?

1+1=10

OK i just checked:

when i start comp or restart,or minimize dosbox status:

UC: 40 to 60 %
Memory: 765 Mo

when i close then restart dosbox:

UC: 2 to 8 %
Memory: 749 Mo

I noticed a strange behaviour with task manager:
if i switch to task manager windows when dosbox is running, then come back to dosbox windows, I've full speed again like if i minimize dosbox status. Hardware problem maybe? Not a big deal though, cause dosbox runs great apart from that.I think i can live with 😉
(tried with all output, all priority, different soundcard, same result)

First i am sorry to post here, you maybe dont support it?

What i like in dosbox portable, is that i dont need to install via win32 installer.I just put file in directory and launch, no need install.
Thats always worked on my xp system, plus i can take my game with me on usb key to play on friends comp without installing anything.
You can just extract and play.

you can use normal dosbox this way too. The installer just makes some shortcuts/folders that are removed if you uninstall it. So after installation copy dosbox folder somewhere else and unistall it.
(and no sign of installation on your pc)

Create an empty file dosbox.conf in dosbox folder, and run dosbox. Inside type:
config -writeconfig dosbox.conf
Create a folder for dosprogs inside dosbox folder. Add in dosbox.conf in [autoexec] section:
mount c .\dosprogs
(And it works everywhere now)

Thx for your reply robertmo

I didnt know that you can make this with normal dosbox, this is a good thing.

But i still think it's not easier than use dosboxportable. You need to install it,and then uninstall it, a bit absurd no ? 😕

Putting a zip archive of the files needed to do it on the official dosbox website would be a good idea maybe?
So we could have the choice beetwen a windows installer and a windows zipfile.
Just my two cents...

But thx again for the tip, i will give it a try.

Please try with normal Dosbox 0.73 now to make sure that nothing goes wrong with the protable version. It shouldn't but we reallly should make sure so that we don't run around circles and overlook the obvious 😀

The installer is a very important thing to have for NORMAL Windows users. Especially the 0.73 installer takes care of many grieves that can be avoided when people use the installer.
I agree that for advanced users a zip file would be nice but ultimatively when you weigh support effort against the effort of people using the installer, I'd go for less support effort 😀

You can also use an installer extractor to get to the Dosbox files in the installer.

Ok ive just followed the tutorial from robertmo, and i must say ""you rock man".

I made my own portable version from dosbox normal like he wrote, plus i've delete the uninstall exe that i dont need, and all is working fine now. No more slowdown or annoyance.

So i think now that the portableapps dosboxportable has some problem with win7 x64 premium, although running fine on my xp comp.

But who is needing the portableapps version infact?
The official release is portable too, works like a charm. 😁

"Woohoo ,that dosbox is masterpiece, thx dosbox people"

i just persist to say you can put a zip on official dosbox page!

Right, there's no need for an additional download as unpacking the installer is quite straightforward.
Please remove your upload (since you mention copyright, you should actually inform yourself
*before* putting something up 😉 ).
