Savage4 isn't Savage 2000. 😀
Yes, Savage4 was competing with TNT2, G400 and Rage 128. Its only advantage was S3TC support.

The savage4 also support multi texturing, which it's predecessor the savage 3D did not. I know because I owned the latter back in the day and had slow performance in games like quake2.
That's correct. And then with Savage 2000 they doubled up the pipelines to basically double Savage 4.
thanks for the links
but i cant get it working with my Diamond Stealth 540
i used:
Unreal (green pepper)
unreal patch226 final
w and w/o OMP-226
s3 reference drivers
latest Diamond drivers
S3 MeTaL 2.0.3.0
Unreal_S3TC_MapPack.7z
everytime i go to the advanced options to chose MeTaL i get the massage faild load
okay i can run it in software mode but this is not that what i want to do
Unreal, not UT? I haven't even tried Unreal with Metal yet. All I have is Unreal Gold and it doesn't seem to support Metal at all.
I suggest trying various versions of Metal and see what happens....

The download links don't work anymore, but they did only a few days ago believe it or not. You can at least get the file names and driver version info though.
exxe, make sure that you are putting the Metal drivers in the Unreal/System folder. I noticed that the 2.0.3.0 Metal install puts them somewhere else and that won't work because the game doesn't find them. In fact I can't figure out where the 2.0.3.0 install puts the files or what their names even are! Diamond's 2.0.0.4 pack asks you where the UT system folder is (that pack won't work with Savage4 though).
Also, the Savage 2000 works fine on even a AGP 8x mobo as long as the 3 jumpers on the card are closed to enable AGP 4x mode instead of 2x. I now have it running on a nForce2 Ultra mobo with a Athlon XP 1800+.
And, I have to say that this card is probably at least as fast and equal quality as a Voodoo3 (maybe a 5) running Glide for UT99. Believe it or not! I will definitely say that Savage 2000 and Voodoo3/4/5 should have been the purchases of choice for the UT99 player. Poor clueless me with my G400 back then (yuck).
I also messed around a bit with the card's T&L. It can be enabled by the tweaker programs. I ran it with Quake 3 and some OpenGL benchmarks including GLExcess and NVIDIA Treemark. Quake 3 displays some geometry issues (for one, you can see inside of walls occasionally). Treemark shows that its T&L hardware is slower than the software capabilities of a Athlon XP 1800+ (unsurprisingly I guess.) T&L only "functions" in OpenGL though, no D3D, and it's flawed as shown by Q3. This is well known though.
i only have the S3 MeTaL 2.0.3.0.exe from here
take a look on many old CDs but find nothing
its alive!
someone send me s540xtreme_win9x_82021.exe
after install this driver and copy the metal.dll from it into unreals system folder its working under metal with S3TC 😁
edit
my testsystem
Asus P2B-LS, Pentium2 333MHz, 256MB System Memory and the Diamond Stealth 540
How well does Savage 4 run the game?
yes, why?

Actually I was asking if it runs smooth. How does it compare to a Voodoo3?
It even ran surprisingly well on my gainward savage 3d
ups
its looks smooth, is there a way to show FPS whan playing?
dont try it with a Voodoo3 yet

For Unreal, I think you bring up the console (~) and type "timedemo 1". Something like that.
UT has a nice menu option that enables a realtime readout of framerate on the screen.
Well the V3 stomps the Savage4. I'm not sure if I expected that. I thought it might be more competitive with a V3 2000.
What CPU was used for those tests?
Asus P2B-LS, Pentium2 333MHz, 256MB System Memory
should i use a faster or slower system?
use whatever you like. That CPU might be a limiter though and could be showing that the Voodoo3 is less CPU dependent.
tried a Pentium3 700MHz on the same system
the voodoo runs a little bid faster but the S3 crashes after 5seconds 🙁
and bluescreens on the next test setup 😠
