98 on a 133? I'd have thought that'd be pretty slow. 98 was slow enough on systems built for it!

Sounds like a good system though. I was just never that keen on the early pentiums. Give me a K5 any day!

I need Windows 98 in order to access the internet; the network card doesn't support Windows 95, nor NT 4.0. The main problem is the lack of RAM: the HDD is paging constantly.

Many graphics has had this "feature" connector...mostly nothing was released for it but probably it was made for an mpeg decoder or something

yeah that connector is useful with hardware mpeg decoders and similar video devices, in fact it allows them to write directly to the vram without going through the pc's bus and display images/video with an overlay technique

98 will run fine even on 32mb, I know because I have it going smoothly on my 486 just okay. If there's a desperate performance situation, there's always 98lite w/ Win95 shell anyway, though doing that would kill support for some later apps that rely on activex/mshtml

You can try Offbyone for a browser if you want snappy browsing performance.

If it was me and running Win98, I would go find a Pentium 200 or 233 MMX and drop in if if the mobo supports it. Dont forget a heatsink/fan if you overclock or get a new CPU.

That motherboard is a socket 5. You can tell that from it's use of SIMMS, instead of DIMMS. So the 133mhz is going to be the max, unless you find a Pentium MMX Overdrive, then you can get to 200mhz.

Could possibly be a early or budget socket 7. I have seen those with only SIMMS.

I guess I have seen Socket 7's with both, but never just SIMMs. I just noticed there is a CoAST slot, to add L2 cache. I'm sticking to it being a Socket 5 😀 So there is another opportunity for an upgrade.

Just checked with CPU-Z for Windows 98, it's a socket 5.
@leileilol: Microsoft recommends that you have 64 mb. 32 mb is also barely enough to run Avast.

The CPU might be a socket 5 cpu but the socket is a socket 7
