I can't get TIE Fighter to work, it keeps saying that I need to load CD drivers and that it can't find my CD when it's right in the drive.

Install VDMSound if you don't already have it, google it.
Run install.exe off the TF cd, and do the maximum install. Do NOT change the install directory, as changing it causes the game to shit itself in XP for some reason. When the install is done and the sound config program starts up, don't configure anything, just exit out (goto custom setup, then quit). Exit the install program and out of any dos windows that may be left.
Start up a new dos window and go fullscreen (alt-enter). Go to the TF directory (c:\tiecd by default) and punch in "dosdrv". This should start up VDMSound. When it finishes, start up imuse.exe (sound config) and do an express setup. It should detect everything, then save and quit.
Everything's setup now, but for some reason you can't just do a right-click->Run with VDMS on the tie.exe, as the game bitches that it can't find the cd when you do that. Whenever you want to play, just open up a dos window, go full screen, dosdrv, then "tie". Voila.
One thing to note is that if you have more than one controller plugged into your computer, unplug everything except for your joystick. I have a PSX pad and a stick, and the game thought that the pad was joystick 1. There doesn't seem to be any way to say "hay game, ignore the pad and use the stick", so just unplug everything but the stick. Annoying, but worth it in the end.

Assuming that you installed the GUI Launchpad and any needed updates (which we don't know...because you didn't provide the information), you need enable "low-level CD-ROM support" on the VLP shortcut it creates.
Right-click on the VLP file and choose Properties. Click on the box by "Enable low-level CD-ROM support (MSCDEX Support). Making there's a check in the box before you leave, click OK, then OK again.
If it still can't "see" the CD-ROM, then it needs support beyond what the NT version of MSCDEX will support. If that is so, then SAPUCDEX is your only hope.
If you have multiple CD-ROM drives, it may also need disabling of the other drives (again, we don't know this because you didn't provide the information).
hail to fellow imperial navy officer! 😀))
game run fine under w2k when i last checked about year ago, with two exceptions. midi music sometimes played, sometimes not, and sound was little delayed, which was quite annoying and made the game unplayable (as the action is rather fast paced, especially later in the game 😀))))). you may need to adjust sound buffer or whatever it was called manually.

Try choosing the basic soundblaster instead of SBPro or SB16.
