Visually, the card is in bad condition. When I switch on power, the BIOS POST screen sometimes displays unusual characters. Then, the Windows 98 splash screen has some "bad looking pixels" on it. I've installed the ATI catalyst 6.2 driver, and the card seems to behave itself about 80% to 90% of the time. 3DMark 99, 2000, and 2001 tests all run OK, but some of the tests look corrupted, while other tests look fine.

My question - I'm sure that the caps can be replaced on this card, but can that dented silver square shaped thing (near the AGP slot connector) be replaced? What is it? Did it become dented because of some kind of "critical failure", or did someone just tred on it?

Thanks a lot people.

that is a 4pin crystal oscillator there, if you look at it it has it's speed printed

Interesting. It says:

FC0-230B
27.000
Fcom 1D

BTW, the smaller caps appear to sit on top of "little trays". Do they do anything special?

that is a 27mhz osc. then 😁

Thanks! I did this search on ebay:
crystal oscillator (27,27mhz)
and it shows some results! 😀 I'm itching to get started on a mobo recapping project (must wait because of the cost involved), but I think that replacing one of these + also a single cap on a vid card would be good practice.
