Hello all,

I am becoming crazy !! I'm trying to play Megarace2 under WinXP but it's impossible !
No error msg when I start the megarace.exe ( i've tried with dos console )
When I launch the install.bat, it displays the installation page with the music installation, it copies without problem on c:\mega2 . But when I start the game ! PAF !! nothing's happening, no error msg.
I've tried with VDMSound but it told me that MSCDEX is not present or something like this.
I've tried too with Dosbox, but it doesnt work, it closed the windows launching the game.

The only way I see is to emulate Win98 with something like Virtual PC or install Win98 ! But I do not have anymore Win 98 ='(

Please if someone got an idea, answer me !

Thanks a lot

cya !

If you know that for sure, I'm not sure what you're asking for...

No error msg when I start the megarace.exe

Is that the only executable file? I don't have the game, but found the demo. It uses a MEGARACE.BAT file, but the only entry in the BAT file is M.EXE; so I just ran the M.EXE instead.

I've tried too with Dosbox, but it doesnt work, it closed the windows launching the game.

Megarace2 needs a 486 minimum. At present, DosBox will only run "unprotected mode" 386 games or lower. The next release with "protected mode" support might support it.

But when I start the game ! PAF !! nothing's happening, no error msg.
I've tried with VDMSound but it told me that MSCDEX is not present or something like this.

When all else fails, start over with the basics. Configure the game to run with no sound and make sure the CD is in the proper drive. Does it start up and run properly (in silence)?

If not, check to see what video mode it uses at startup. If it's starting up in a VESA mode, you might have to use NOLFB with it.

I'm trying to help r0x0r on another forum...

Without VDMS, the game doesn't switch to the graphic mode, and exits to the console without any error message.

When running the game with VDMS, he gets a shell message about MSCDEX not being found. I advised him to enable MSCDEXNT in the autoexec.nt, and if it didn't work, to use SpuCDEX instead. He has either problesm to run SapuCDEX, or the problem lies elsewhere...

BTW, since it requires MSCDEX, I assume it's a DOS game... Unless there is a Windows patch?

Ok so I've tried with M.exe but it's the same .

unfortunately I did not find the option in order to disable the sound and I put the cd correctly I think ( I have virtual cdrom with daemon )

I know that the game use VESA mode and the only way I foudn to "emulate" vesa graphics is with VDMSound ...
maybe there are other ways but I dont know how to do.

You wrote in your post that I have to use NOLFB !
could you tell me exactly how to use it ? or maybe a good link explaining that ?!

And Zorbid : I did not find any patch for this game ! I will try to contact the cryo support center Monday, maybe they will can help me ! I dont think so ;o)

That seems to suggest it's starting a VESA screenmode.

When running the game with VDMS, he gets a shell message about MSCDEX not being found. I advised him to enable MSCDEXNT in the autoexec.nt,

If he's not using the GUI Launchpad, then MSCDEXNT should already be enabled (it's enabled by default). If he is using the LaunchPad, he just needs to click on "Low-level CD-ROM support" to enable it.

I assume it's a DOS game... Unless there is a Windows patch?

It is DOS, no Windows version available.

Bloody elite speak...

Ok so I've tried with M.exe but it's the same .

unfortunately I did not find the option in order to disable the sound.

You need to set the game to use "No digital audio" by running the game's setup program. For the demo, this is SETSOUND.EXE. For the full game, it might be different (INSTALL, SOUND, etc...).

...and I put the cd correctly I think ( I have virtual cdrom with daemon )

Presuming that the Virtual image works, you want to make sure that it's in your "first" CD-ROM drive. IOW, DOS games want the CD to be in the drive with the "lowest" letter (E: instead of F:).

It may also require that you disable other CD-ROM drives. It might not be compatible with "virtual drives".

I know that the game use VESA mode

I know it supports VESA, but often, these games will have a VGA backup mode.

...and the only way I foudn to "emulate" vesa graphics is with VDMSound ...

That's not what that does. It simply makes the window start up in "full-screen" mode before starting the game.

NOLFB disables LFB VESA screenmodes in the hope that compatible non-LFB modes are available.

It would help to know what your video card is...which we don't.

In any case since you already have a BAT file to start the game, do this: Download (and unzip) NOLFB.COM to your game's directory. Edit your MEGARACE.BAT file (right-click, choose EDIT) to look like this:

NOLFB.COM
M.EXE

Then close and save the file. Try running it without VDMSound, then with it.

hey !

so :
- I put the cd in the fisrt cdrom drive letter
- You cannot setup the sound to "No digital audio", you have to choice a sound card per force ( you say like that ? )
- I closed daemon disabling virtual drive
- It seems that the game have no vga mode
- I tryed to configure the vmds in order to get the vesa mode and enable low level cdrom but it did not work
- I tried the game starting sapucdex instead of mscdexnt but did not work too
- I will try tonight with nolfb !

Finally :
I installed yesterday Win98 because it get on my nerves 😀 I did not try yet !

But it get on my nerves too to have Win98 on C: and WinXP on I: so if it works on WinXP, it will be great !

Thanks again nicht sehr gut ! If you got other idea, you can tell me ! 😀

PS : My language is not elite ! 😀 I ever used this name written like this since 3/4 years because I find that is pretty kind

Does your sound setup program look like the image attached below?

- I tryed to configure the vmds in order to get the vesa mode and enable low level cdrom but it did not work

"Did not work" meaning what? What did it actually do?

I installed yesterday Win98 because it get on my nerves 😀 I did not try yet !

I'm not sure I understood all of that. You are saying that installed Win98 now?

I was referring to the "r0x0r" term.

No thats not the same display ! really not.

When I say "did not work" , it means that the game is running with the same error msg.

Anyway nich sehr gut, I installed Win98 and the game works perfectly !!

Really, I thank you for your help, you're really nice !

Cya man

Ok, so the full game apparently uses a different sound system. Glad you got it working, but I'm hoping that someone else with the full version will be able to "fill in the blanks" about what's going on when running it within XP.

An old topic I know. But Megarace 2 works (although slow) fine on Windows 2000 SP4 using VDMSound (V2.1). I just checked the VESA and MSCDEX boxes. NOLFB wasn't needed.

I also had a [very] quick try with DOSBox (6.1) and whilst it run up OK, it locked when I started a race.

The sound system configuration window for the full game is a 'graphics' app rather than the DOS based one. It doesn't do anthing different - creates the DIG.INI file.

Does anybody know a solution?
Many thanks in advence!

Ok....

Are you trying to play Megarace 2 under DosBox or XP?
DosBox will probably be too slow for you so you'll have to use it under XP, Microsoft Virtual PC, or MS-DOS.

Finally, Did you read the above thread?
