Alright, so here's the situation:

I installed Descent II through dosbox through a walkthrough on another site, and I did learn a bit of programming in the process (I'm still learning and a bit slow with it) and by the time I tried running Descent II at the end of the process, the dosbox screen went blank.

So, I figured I'd reinstall both dosbox and Descent II to another directory. It didn't take too long, and after going through the setup process again I tried running Descent II a second time and the dosbox screen went blank again.

Now, I don't know what I'm doing wrong and the walkthrough I've been going through has been very helpful but it doesn't have anything on my current problem. I can access the Descent II setup just fine, but everytime I try to run the game, the dosbox screen goes blank and I have to restart. I have another thread on this forum bookmarked but I'm really not sure what other command I need to use, and I'm really anxious to play this game again.

These are the main commands I've been using to get it running:

CDROM E
CD/GAMES/DESCENT2
D2

What else am I missing? Thanks in advance for the help guys!

I made a Bin/cue image from mine.

The commands I woulds use:
MOUNT C C:\DOS\GAMES -t dir -freesize 200
IMGMOUNT D C:\DOS\Descent-2.cue -t iso
C:
CD DESCENT2
DESCENT2.EXE

Are you running it in a window? Some monitors will go blank while switching modes. Keeping it set to window display will avoid this. You can then switch to full screen with Alt+Enter.

Well, the dosbox itself is a window and I have put it to fullscreen mode but even then it doesn't do anything. I usually have it in windowed form so I can look at any info I might be using.. would you recommend me using full-screen mode before I try to run it? Also, thanks for the command lines

Using a source port like D2X-XL is probably easier than getting the game to work in DOSBox, especially when you're not very proficient at using DOS and DOSBox. Plus you get additional features like higher resolution graphics, configurable controls, etc. .

Do you have a link on D2X-XL? I've gone to the site but I'm not sure which link to click, plus I have D2X-rebirth but I will probably use it for a backup if I can figure it out.

Download the current version of D2X-XL here. The website is a bit confusing, you have to move the mouse pointer to the far left of the page where it says "Sidemenu". The beauty of D2X-XL is that you can play both D1 and D2 levels with it, amongst many many other features.

Btw: this is probably the wrong forum for this thread, shouldn't it be in "DOSBox Games/Apps"?

Oh, and robertmo: your keyboard seems to be broken. Whenever you're trying to write some friendly and helpful remark it seems as if your system just pastes the same few blocks of text over and over again, in every message.

it is called a link. You use it if you don't want to type again sth already typed somewhere. You can try using it too. It helps saving a lot of time, that can be used other way, for example to figure out how to make sound working properly in dosbox.

No, I was wondering if it was starting full screen which would cause the monitor to switch modes. If it's already windowed and the window is blank then ignore that suggestion.

Alright well, I went ahead and made another thread in DOSBox games/apps so I could continue there with a link to this one. Hopefully I can find a fix soon, and I'll remember where to post next time I have a problem. Sorry for any inconveniences 😀

Did you try changing your output mode to something else (not surface)? It could be hung up on the intro trying to change a palette each frame.

You could also patch up to the official Windows version, try this one.
