Dosbox can take command line parameters eg here is a simple batch file to run DOOM contained in a folder of the same name, where dosbox is contained in folder called dosbox:

cd\
cd Dosbox
dosbox -c "mount c c:\DOOM" -c "c:" -c "doom"

(I'm using xp btw)

Anway, while doom will run under just about any circumstances or frontend,
I fancy other programs will be more stable when run from simple batch file such as above than from a frontend written in java or somesuch

How does that take care of video card type, EMS/XMS memory settings, output, joysticks, network, and sound devices?

If you can write a batch file then so be it, but don't say it's a substitute for the interface of eased execution of games and programs. The frontends serve a purpose and you don't have to use them.

Thanks for reply. Using the batch file simply uses all the defaults for settings u mention. But hey most games seem to run just fine without changing defaults. I like dbgl but had trouble trying to run wingcommander3 which runs ok using the batch file.

cd\
cd DOSBox
dosbox -c "mount c c:\wc3" -c "mount d f:\ -t cdrom" -c "d:" -c "wc3"

(Sorry, above now edited)

So maybe the dbgl java program affects the program in some way?
I found lost eden very stable too with the batch file. Do u recommend any particular frontend?

DBGL is what I use because it's cross platform and has a focus on portability, like say using the same exact paths and stuff between a Linux and Windows install

Ynys, it looks like you are not mounting your c drive correctly. Please make sure you're installing the game in DOSBox and playing the game with the exact same mountings.

Hello again

>How does that take care of video card type . . .

This is all catered for in the .conf fie eg dosbox.conf

But I have now twigged, at last how to use the -conf parameter in the dosbox commnand line

So taking doom as an example where on drive C: I have the folders

DOOM
Dosbox

And storing the doom specific video, sound settings etc in doombx.conf stored in the DOOM folder, u could use:

cd\
cd Dosbox
dosbox -c "mount c c:\DOOM" -c "c:" -c "doom" -conf "C:\DOOM\doombx.conf"

As bat file stored in DOOM folder

The whole process could be repeated using different game folders eg
c:\wolfen etc
with similar batch file and conf file in each

Should work well and be efficient, runtime wise, in practise

To ease the .conf file customisations, dos box conf editor could be used

Have looked at a few frontends D.O.G is pleasant but seems to mount things in rather peculiar way. DBGL, I agree mounts things intelligently but I suggest, if a particular game does not run well, u could try the batch file approach I have outlined above.

Many thanks to the dosbox developers
Happy blasting
