i have a ahtlon xp 1700+ in a soyo dragon lite motherboard and a cmedia sound card onboard. i am using windows 2000

this f***ing s&&t does not emulate sound blaster. so, i tried to use vdmsound in order to run my old games and emulatores

the sound was jerky and the emus ran very slow

i have tried to run fce ultra and z26 emulator

is a configuration problem? i only changed the IRQ to 5 to match my BLASTER variable

or vdmsound does not work very well with cmedia?

is there a driver which emulates sound blaster with cmedia?

thanks in advance

I have another motherboard (Asus K7V333) with a C-Media chipset (C8738) and VMDSound works fine with it. It's not the best sound chip around, but it does the job. Under Windows 2000 you should have no problems with either IRQ 5 or 7, so this should not be a problem either. It really looks like that your problems can be related to the games you are playing, so we need help from someone more familiar with them.

Meanwhile, you could try a simple DOS game like Ms. Pac-em, available at this thread. It's small, it's free and it automatically detects the sound card, so it should run without problems under VMDSound. If you can run it with music and sound effects, this will assure us that VMDS is running fine in your machine.

Well, the CMedia will support basic emulation within Win9x, but Win2K won't allow for direct access so emulation like VDMSound is required for DOS program access.

Well performance will vary from program to program, but I will let you know that CMedia's chipset is on the "weak" side. Channeling DOS audio through Windows2000 needs a lot more resources than just running the same games in DOS or Windows9x. That's because in DOS or Windows9x, the DOS program is directly accessing the hardware, which is a no-no in Win2k.

?? Are you talking about DOS console emulators? In all honesty, use Windows versions. When you run a DOS emulator with VDMSound, you are in fact: running an emulator within an emulator. That's a heavy drain on your PC's resources, so it's no wonder that you would be getting poor performance (especially with a C8738).

...is there a driver which emulates sound blaster with cmedia?

Since there's no direct access allowed in Win2k, emulation is needed for sound with DOS programs.
