Okay, here is another one.

Can anyone get this to work correctly under VDMSound. I get a random error it seems. The game runs fine, MIDI is fine and the CD audio (voice) seems okay. Randomly what happens is that people start talking and after 1 sec or so the voice cuts out and they stop talking. If I hit escape, to bypass the dialogue, then the next person starts talking but they cut off about 1 o 1/2 second into their little speech.

The floppy version works fine (digital audio samples play okay) but the CD version seems to have some issues. Any ideas my fellow old-school cyberpunks?

Thanks in advance!

I know I have this, but can't remember if it's the floppy or the CD version. Will have to look...

Not many. My instinct would be to test it with DosBox.

Thanks for the attempt. DOSbox works okay (it plays through the into with no problems) but as soon as you start the game it crashes DOSbox with a 'GetText' error. This is what VDMsound says when you exit the program after the bad sound behavior manifests itself.

The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.

Well, that's certainly no good. If you configure it to run with no sound, do you still get this error? If so, running it with VDMSound is probably not an option.

Still haven't found it, but it looks like it's not relevant here as mine is the floppy version. Anyone who has the CD version and wishes to help, feel free to jump in.

Hi, did anyone find out anything about this speech error.

I'm having the same problem running Bloodnet under XP using the latest version of VDMSound.

You just get little clips of speech when you press enter or escape then sometimes high pitched beeping.

Any ideas?

Is the speech stored as an audio track on the CD? If so, then Loom (CD talkie version) has a similar problem... even with SAPUCDEX (well, it doesn't crash, but voices sometimes stop/silence out).

Thanks for replying.

Well the speech is stored in a 284 MB single file called SPEECH.SL and I can't for the life of me find anything that can play the file as a standalone. I don't even know what kind of format it might be in. I thought if I could I'd be able to ascertain whether the file itself was ok or not.

I'm sure I actually got this game working with speech before so I think the cd is ok, unless it got damaged in some way. But since prismra seems to have had the same problem I would guess it's a software thing.

I've tried running it in DOSBox too and the speech error is exactly the same.

Anything potentially relevant in the VDMSound debug log?

I managed to glean these error messages which I think may be relevant.

@W - 12:08:58.942 - SBController

Do you have any idea what these could mean?

Those are OK. Any other messages that appear a lot?

I've been getting this one:

@E - 09:21:37.384 - SysExIndicator
An invalid value ('Scroll Lock') was provided for the led identifier
('led'). Valid values are: 'NUM', 'CAPS', 'SCROLL' and 'none'.
Using 'none' by default.

I don't know whether that's relevant?

It's weird, but not relevant. 😀 No messages that repeat tens or hundreds of times, other than"invalid/unkown port 226" etc.? Could it be a configuration issue with the game, i.e. not realizing wjere the "big" voice files sit and it assuming a "minimal" HDD installation and not looking for them?

Yep it seems like the game doesn't want to access the cd, if only it had an ini file that I could read and edit manually but it has one with only weird shapes in it.

I've tried an endless amount of setups, and I've also tried it in DOSBox and I get the same problem. The game wont access the cd without a key press and only then for a small clip.

I wish there was a way I could copy the files to my harddrive and run it from there but as I said, I can't edit the ini file to point to them so it wouldn't work.

Edit: I'm also getting a pop-up box when I close the game which says:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0000 IP:0077 OP:f0 37 05 12 02 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
