I had my eyes on it, but for the time being will play with Socket 7 hardware. I liked that this board had PCI and IDE and FDD on the board. It also looks quite new and has a good chipset.

But 66 euros? WOW

Anything special about this board? There must be a reason why it fetched such a high price.

It's one of the last 486 boards made but nothing special really, I use to have one...no EDO RAM support...slow PCI performance.

I guess this means it's time to sell of my last batch of unused 486 motherboards 😁

Look at the Dallas clock chip. It translates: Trouble!

If I remember correctly it was socketed so it's easy to pop in a new one (yes, they can still be bought new)

I got 2 of those boards actually. Iirc the later version had PS2 mouse support but neither of the boards I have have that as I got the older versions.

Lemme look up a pic I posted earlier...

Edit: Here it is:

I could check on my boards. How do I tell if the DALLAS is socketed or not? (except by pulling hard 😜 )

Edit: Found this:
Replacing the Dallas real time clock on a 486 mobo

Seems they are socketed for the newer versions 😉

What is the issue with this "dallas chip"?

Hmm but wouldn't it be a lot better than ISA only boards or VLB boards?

Does one really need speed for a 486? You might as well go with a Pentium. I saw these 486s for compatibility with Games that don't run on a fast Pentium. And with the Turbo button you can turn it into 386 speed.

It's better then ISA and also better then VLB, the latter because of the varied choice of PCI cards we have today.
Do we -really- need the speed of the 486? I dunno, but probably we do since theres so many on these forums who have a working 486 😜
I have one, though I've barely used it in the last 2 years or so.

Cool!

Well I got my 2 Super Socket 7 boards! I was thinking about bidding for the third one, as the seller has some cheap 1$ item but he doesn't want to do combined postage so I will likely pass...

Can't agree with you fully here....a good socket 3 mobo with VLB slots can have better or equal performance when it comes to gfx cards

Good PCI performance on a socket 3 board is handy when it comes to demandning SVGA games from the 486 era

But wouldn't those games love to run on a P1 or better?

Yep, but then you're sitting with a Pentium cpu that have some problems with earlier games...."you can't have the cake and eat it too" 😉

None of my 486 boards will POST with a Voodoo3 installed, they seem to be very picky so I wouldn't buy one on PCI alone.

yep, but it's a bit of a waste using such a card on this kind of system since the whole board is a big bottleneck

Have tested around 25 different types of socket 3 mobo's with PCI bus, haven't ran into any incompatability issues with any PCI gfx card so far (ATI, S3, WD, Tseng etc)

I got a Voodoo3 going but unless I used some old drivers it would BSOD with a 486-like CPU installed. Later drivers worked with a Pentium Overdrive so I imagine that at some point they switched to using some Pentium instructions.

But yeah if you want to play games that use 3D acceleration, you shouldn't be messing with a 486 system in the first place. 😀
