I have done quite a bit of of looking into on this as a matter of fact....

I was getting conflicting results and thought I would check with a community of gamers who seemed quite devoted to DOSBOX emulation. I guess you do not want to be bothered.

Everywhere I look I only see Fallout 2 listed as "Microsoft Windows"

however I remember using windows before XP and having the option of running most games through MSDOS if I wanted to.

I also saw several random comments on about people running Fallout 2 trying to run Fallout 2 in DOSBOX etc.

Rahter than jump in an ask a question in an old thread I made my own.

Is it that hard to answer the question?

I think I can tell you off the top of my head though that the only games with DOS versions of those you listed are the first 4 TES games that you mentioned (if by "Legends" you mean "Battlespire").

Of that list, only the first four Elder Scrolls games are DOS (Arena, Daggerfall, Battlespire, Redguard)

The rest requires Windows 95, but Counter-Strike 1.6 relies on Steam which requires at the very least Windows 2000. Myst is for Windows 3.1.

And no, you can't play any of them on your freakin' doeverythingbutcall communications device.

Is Steam actually required for CS1.x if you have physical installation media? I suppose it probably is now to use the latest version so that you can play with others on the Internet.

trev186, I'm curious if you know what DOS is. You certainly can't run anything that requires Direct X.

CS1.5 is the latest WON/Non-Steam version (in which the only players are hackers), and the physical Counter-Strike CD is only 1.0. Steam versions start at 1.6

I think Redguard requires Windows 9x. At its core, it appears to be a DOS game, but I think you must launch it from Windows. Mobygames says its a Windows 95 game. OTOH, Arena, Daggerfall, and Battlespire are definitely for DOS.

There were 2 versions of Myst. The first version released was for Win 3.1, and then I think they re-released it for Windows 95. (It was then rewritten, and called "Real Myst".)

Yeah I'm not sure about Redguard because it's the only TES game I've never played (thought it required DOS Glide but I guess it has a software renderer too?).

Daggerfall runs fine under Win9x but is a DOS program that uses DPMI. Battlespire too, but it's one of the most demanding DOS games ever produced, so it runs best under pure DOS.

RealMyst is a hardware-accelerated real-time rendered remake of Myst. I badgered it into running on Vista a couple weeks ago and wasn't super-impressed, mostly because the controls were wonky and because it refused to run at high resolutions due to needing to be run in a Win9x compatibility mode. I believe there's also a Masterpiece Edition pre-rendered remake that runs under slightly more modern OSes and has higher-resolution re-renders of the original scenes/movies.

There's also a native iOS port of Myst that looks pretty good on my iPod Touch 2.

I probably shouldn't, but I'm just gonna answer you off the top of my head...

The elder Scroll's Series (Arena, Daggerfall, Redgaurd, Legends, Morrowind) -The first four YES, Morrowind NO (I presume you mean Battlespire when you say Legends)

The rest of them are a resounding NO. Some of them were reasonable questions, like Myst and Fallout 2 (Fallout 1 had a DOS version), but things like War3... 🤣... no.

Generally speaking it's very rare for any game later than 1997 to have a DOS version, and it was rare even in '96-97. Ironically Redguard is one such exception, being released in 1998.

I'm not a big fan of using mobygames and such places for this, as they are a bit annoying to navigate (but are more foolproof and thorough, mind you). Personally I google for "<name of game> wikipedia" and then click on the link to the wikipedia article. On the right-hand side there is a list of "Platforms" for a given game, and I check for "DOS" or "MS-DOS". It also lists what year any release(s) came out in what country.
