Hi everyone,

I'm trying to run the game Z through DOSbox. I'm using Windows 7 XP Mode. I have the game loading with no issues besides one, the mouse cursor. The normal XP cursor remains through startup and seems to be interfering with the in game cursor which reacts strangely and very inaccurately to movement whilst the XP cursor functions normally. Otherwise the game functions perfectly with sound and cutscenes, no graphical glitches, i can actually play the game just with a cursor which is barely controllable and very unpredictable, and out of sync with the Xp cursor which remains there but cannot be used in the game!

I've tried ...

- Enabling/disabling integration options in XP mode
- Updating mouse drivers to official Logitech drivers over default XP Mode drivers
- Changing sensitivity in the config file (Changes the sensitivity of the in game cursor but it still pretty much uncontrollable)
- Using ctrl-10 to lock the cursor (Again this affects the ingame cursor properly and unlocks when I click)
- Changing resolutions trying various graphical options/running in different compatibility modes

I'm also using an older DOSBox version (0.62) as using newer versions produces different problems, and I used 0.62 to get this game running on my old XP system. But I've also tried using 0.65 (Same cursor problems), 0.73 and 0.74 (Problem preventing game startup)

Does anyone have any other suggestions on how I can 'deactivate' the Xp cursor on DOSbox startup?

Thanks

Why not just use 0.74 natively without an XP layer?

0.74 works with Z for me.

You're interfacing with the virtual XP via a RDP session which adds an additional layer of possible performance loss/source of problems/complexity. That's how XP mode works, there's no way around it AFAIK.

Leilei is correct though, there's no reason at all for running DOSBox in a VM. I wonder why you're doing it.

I can't seem to install the game on Windows 7, I get a compatibility error just trying to run setup, and I thought I'd need both the install directory and the CD to get it running.

I'll forget about XP mode and see if I can find a way around the install, just move the install folder from the VM or something.

Thanks for the replies!

I was able to get it running almost perfectly just by copying across the install folder from the VM to Windows 7 and going from there with 0.74, as suggested!

I have some missing sounds and the mouse cursor is functioning but with a little lag, but certainly the game is playable now and the original issue is gone completely. I'll try and find solutions to the other issues. Thanks guys!

Dominus: I didn't know I could install through DOSBox, I'm still learning about it! Z is the only game I've used DOSbox for so far. Thanks for your reply

INSTALL FROM WITHIN DOSBOX. Do NOT install within Windows 7. Do NOT install within Windows XP or its layer.

People will have less problems installing through DOSBox than otherwise 😀
