this is definitely not new hardware, but maybe someone here can tell me what's going on. i'm attempting to play ultima iv on a 386dx-33 system using dos 6.22 and have no idea what i am doing. i've tried several things and while i can get the title, new game intro and character creation, the game always craps out on me after that.

running off the disks alone i get through the card readings and then get asked for the player disk, which it reads and then asks the program disk again, which it tries to read and then exits back out to dos saying "packed file corrupt." i tried copying the program disk to hdd and running that, then feeding it the player disk as normal, but that gives me the same result.

i'd just chalk it up to bad disks, but i also installed and ran the version of the game from http://www.moongates.com/History/History_4.htm and that exits back to dos immediately after the card readings, so it seems like there is something else wrong here (i mean, in addition to a likely bad disk).

any help would be greatly appreciated. :\

Have you tried using LOADFIX before going through the process? "Packed file is corrupt" (from EXEPACK) is one of the reasons the LOADFIX program existed in real DOS.

wow, yeah! loadfix b:/ultima.com worked and now it's playing just fine! i thought that packed file is corrupt business meant my disks were shot, hah. dos is way out of my field of experience.

i guess now i can try putting the program disk on the hdd and adding the music patch...
