Hey Everyone!
My father got this software with his first Multimedia Kit many years ago, about 1995. It was part of my childhood and now I want to remember the old days...
But I'm experiencing problems trying to run this software in modern machines. Already tried virtual machines running Windows 95, but couldn't make it work...
In DOSBox I get the following message during installation:
"The sound card is not installed properly or supported by "Children's Melodies"".
I guess this software is simply not supported by DOSBox, but I decided to ask here before giving up. Any ideas? Is there the possibility that it will work one day in another version??
Also, has anyone here already figured out another way to run this software?
Thanks for any help!

dosbox version? OS?

Did you correctly install the application and configure the sound card? How?

Hey there!
Well, I just can't go on with the installation because of that message, can't configure anything after installation cause I can't finish it...
But the program runs the installer just fine, and I can still hear the songs in a regular CD player.
I am using version 0.74 on Windows XP.
Installing through Windows 95 on a virtual machine also gave me sound card errors, maybe because this software is too specific for the CreAtive sound card which came with it...

What sound card was it? You can find a few choices in the dosbox config file,
also try using a low fixed cycles count in case the initialization code requires a
rather slow pc.

Ok, I will try changing some configs and then I post back here!
But I can't remember the sound card, don't have the old computer anymore... I only remember that the kit came with a one or two speed CD drive, a pair of speakers, the soud card, this CD, and a floppy with Lemmings, haha...

Maybe there is a text file in the software folder that lists the supported sound devices.

I tried making some config changes, but didn't have any luck...

Found this on a text file in the CD:

4. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
To run Screen Singer Series, you will require the following minimum PC
configurations:

þ IBM(R) PC/AT or 100% compatibles with 386-33MHz or higher microprocessor
þ 4 MB of RAM and 2 MB of free hard disk space
þ MS-DOS(R) 5.0 or later; or from Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) 3.1 or later
with 256-color support. The musical screen saver feature will run with
Windows 3.1 or later.
þ SVGA monitor with VESA or 100% compatibles display adaptor with 640x480
resolution, 256-color support and 512KB video memory (for full 256-color
support)
þ Sound Blaster Pro(TM) or Sound Blaster 16(TM) series audio card with
Creative Lab CD-ROM drive
þ Speakers or headphones
þ Microphone (optional)
þ Microsoft (R) or 100% compatible mouse (optional)

Following that, shouldn't it run directly with default config?

Yes, except for speed reasons (see my previous posting) or the app utilizing
very special asp/dsp features of the sb16 card (very unlikely).

How did you mount your CD in DOSBox?

Sorry, we were almost chatting here... I had to leave for a while...
I tried using low fixed cycles too...
For the CD drive I use "mount d d:\ -t cdrom"
And I have to mount drive C just like "mount c c:\", when I try to mount a folder like "mount c c:\test" the installation won't even start because of not detecting any sound cards.
Using "mount c c:\" I can start the installation normally from drive D typing "install". It runs just fine until it verifies the installed sound blaster. After that, it crashes saying that error massage I posted before...

I don't understand much of these things, but this that wd said "very special asp/dsp features of the sb16 card (very unlikely).", couldn't it be the answer?

I wish you guys could test this for me, I really want to make it work again... The problem is that it is a mixed mode CD, I tried and couldn't make an image of it, and you probably won't find any images out there to test it...
I looked for help with this software everywhere and couldn't find anything, really sad...

Guess it requires win3.x

Even worse is that I already tried a virtual machine with windows 3.1, but the problem for that is no CD drive support... I know there is a way to install a CD drive on Windows 3.1 but I don't know how... And I used to run this software on Windows 95 back there. Also, the system requirements say it can be installed through DOS, and it really starts the installation normally through DOSBox, only there is this sound card support problem.

In a Windows 95 VM I tried installing through DOS and Windows, both installations gave me sound card problems. I was able to start the program in one of these installations, but it was all buggy because of the errors during installation. Then I tried making an image of the CD and figured out that it wouldn't recognize the music part because of the mixed mode.

I can't find anything about the CD, except in youtube and amazon. The account of the guy who posted the videos in youtube is no longer available, I tried asking him how he made this program work...
Here is a link just to show what it is:

Updating...

I set up another virtual machine with Windows 95 and don't know why, but this time it worked. It's running really slow, but this time I didn't get any sound card errors during installation. So the CD is working just fine.
Also, installing through Windows didn't work it had to be the DOS installation, so it's strange that it’s not working with DOSBox. I think it would run smoother in DOSBox, since almost everything gets a little slow in virtual machines, but there is this sound card incompatibility in DOSBox...
Any chance of that being added to the emulator?
Thanks!

Some games require some of the drivers that are put in the config.sys in MS-DOS by the Soundblaster driver install.

So check the config.sys in your VM to see if they are there. If so then IIRC they also had TSR versions of those drivers or you could install MS-DOS inside DOSBox on an HD image, install the SB drivers and then install your game but there's no CD support with HD images so you'd have to use a DOS CD emulator or crack the game.
