Am I correct in assuming that you are trying to get a V1 card working in a system that once had a V2 in it? If this correct, then I feel more strongly now that you have driver issues. If I were you, and I mean that literally, then I would do a clean install of Win9x, on any old test HDD, and just see if you can get the V1 to work. Just to check out whether this thing works or not.

Not sure about the .inf file but the monitor and matrox work perfectly at all resolutions and at the correct refresh rate even now with the 3DFX in. It's just when a 3DFX game is run or if I try to use the test option in the 3DFX screen properties that the monitor freaks out. The 3DFX properties also will not let me set the glide refresh rate to anything other than 60. The monitor can run 60Hz though because if I choose 60Hz from the Matrox properties it works. Not that I want to run 60Hz of course.

This machine has Windows 98 but I boot just in to DOS and only run 98 if I need it. Can I reinstall 98 without changing the DOS installation? I have my DOS menus and games just the way I want them and don't want to change them.

I had a problem caused by this issue also, when I switched V2's around on my ME rig without bothering to uninstall/install drivers.
I fixed it by deleting all references to the 3dfx card in the registry and after that it worked fine.

Theres also a couple (old) driver removal tools which I've used a couple times and, seeing a reinstall can quickly take up over an hour, would be worth a shot 😉

I think the program was called driver cleaner and it's very easy to use.

Sorry, my bad. I wonder if it's the Matrox PowerDesk software that's causing problems? Do you have any old hardware you could use as a test rig, in an attempt to isolate this problem, rather than uninstall software/Windows on your main rig?

Well I have my 486 and I also have other old graphics cards. Maybe it would be worth taking the Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 out of the 486 and trying it in the PII with the Voodoo? I think I am going to need that driver cleaner tool if I can find it though.

That might be worth a go. Also, have you got any old HDD or compact flash disk? Something you can temporarily install Windows 9x on? That would be the way I'd do this. Start from scratch with a cleanly installed OS. Leave nothing to chance. On a P2 machine, it would only take about 30 minutes.

You'd only have to swap out your current HDD with a "new old" one. Although I would also be tempted to try this with the Diamond Stealth card, rather than the Matrox, because of potential problems with the PowerDesk software.

Actually that is a good idea. I do have some spare HDD's lying around. I think I will try that with a fresh install of 98 and the Diamond Stealth card.

, and that sounds good to me. Ah, you've just jogged my memory about something. When you have Win98 installed, and then put in the V1 card, when the desktop appears, it will prompt you for the Win98 CD, to load the V1 driver from the Win98 CD. Say no to this. You don't want it. Then, install the driver you downloaded instead.

BTW, I have had luck with the Diamond 1.6 driver, I think you mentioned earlier. You just run it, and choose install, and off it goes and installs the driver, and all is well. The test button should definitely work. If it fails on a fresh clean OS install, then the card is defective. If it looks in good shape, then one of the chips may have picked up some ESD damage.

Even though I can't remember where I got it from (I've had that program for a couple years now), it does look like the right program.
I remember having got it, forgot where I put it and when tried to download it again, it wasn't freeware anymore. Took forever to hunt down a free version!

Anyway, the old version isn't updated anymore but it should work great with older drivers and XP and 9x.

Edit: I never bothered hunting down a replacement program since the old program always worked for me and I don't often find myself in the situation of actually needing such a program.
Anyway, just in case, I downloaded it again. 😉
