I'm trying to track down an EGA monitor for another old PC project.

They seem pretty thin on the ground.

What do people think of the 1084S? I heard they are pretty ordinary as PC monitors.

Here's one on ebay but its got a yellow picture, is this just likely to be the d-sub connector or something more serious?

It occours to me that the 1084S is only CGA but I believe my video card can be set to provide CGA output. Unless someone can point me in the direction of a more suitable monitor?

Maybe look for really old VGA monitors, 14 inch or less, some of them are multisync and can display EGA. I have 3 of them, so far all needed repair though.

They tend to have additional switches at the backside.

I own one of these monitors, and while I don't know if it supports EGA, I know it will take the 15KHz RGB outputs of my many game consoles(Sega Genesis & MegaDrive, PC Engine Duo-R, Super NES, Sega Master System, etc.). And let me tell you: it looks like I'm playing my game consoles on an emulator with no blurring and no bleeding.

I don't know the specifics of EGA, but if you can provide the specifics of EGA for me, I'll be able to tell you if the Commodore 1084S will work with an EGA video signal.

I'm pretty sure the 1084 doesn't support the 640x350 EGA mode, only the 640x200 and 320x200 modes. Pretty much, it'll work great as a CGA monitor, but you should probably look elsewhere for EGA.

Well I'm not an expert but I think the main differences are 64 color palette (16 at a time, like CGA) and up to 640 x 350 resolution with 22kHz horizontal sync frequency. Otherwise I'm led to believe that most lower res EGA modes are largely compatible with CGA monitors.

I'm pretty sure the 1084 doesn't support the 640x350 EGA mode

Was there many games that supported this mode?

There are ega->vga converters on eBay right now fairly cheap, I'm not sure of their quality/other workings though.
