Kasparov's Gambit is worth checking out. A fantastic game on CD-ROM that was overshadowed by the fantastic ChessMaster series of the time.

BattleChess is fun but not a serious chess engine.

Archon isnt Chess, but its fun and challenging...with fun graphics like BattleChess. Archon Ultra graphics are far superior to the original.

Sargon, I dont remember being especially fancy, though a competent engine.

Star Wars Chess had cool graphics but not much else.

Ill check out Fritz 3 aka Knightstalker, and some of these later games.

CGW had some great write ups on the ChessMaster and Kasparov's Gambit.

Sargon II/III by Hayden Software are more classic than Sargon 4. I never liked Sargon 4/V as much as the earlier games.

Cant disagree with that.

The Chessmaster series went like this...

2100 = much improved graphics
3000 = expansion into personalities and teaching modes
4000 = CD-ROM with lots more expansion of same
