I remember how puzzled I was when I first heard a game played using an Aureal Vortex - based sound card (it was quite similar to the feeling experienced when I first saw 3dfx Voodoo in action on Quake2, compared to software rendering).

Now, I'm close to completing my first retro gaming system and I'd like to experience that feeling again - unfortunately I only have four PCI slots and I don't like having all of them occupied (ethernet card, Virge/DX, Voodoo2 are already there). Is there something ISA-based that can give me 3D sound?

get any card that uses the Via Envy24 chip... the drivers allows for QSound
there is at least one card that has a WB connector (Dynex... US only... cheap on ebay)

Look at the ISA soundcard overview in my signature.
ESS, Crystal and Yamaha Chipsets have 3D sound, maybe more brands have it. But I suspect that in the ISA age many 3D effects implementations were flawed and/or noisy.

oops... I misread...
as far as ISA, the all of the PnP sound blasters ISAs have the crappy binaural 3D sound crap
or you can have the "broken" QSound off of the SB16 ASP or AWE32.... it really only works in windows and requires driver hacks (a simple one too)
