I have recently bought the game "NAM" (comercially released build game, that started out as a duke3d mod) and I have some trouble running it smoothly.

The system should be able to handle the game easily, but for some reason it doesn't.

Even 640x480 is terribly slow and completely unplayable.

Other build-engine games, like Duke3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood run at 800x600 or even 1024x768 quite smoothly.

Quick specs:
P55C 233
128MB SDRAM
SB AWE32
Matrox Mystique
Dos 6.22

Any ideas why all other build games that I own run perfectly, but NAM stutters like hell (about 1-2FPS in 640x480)?

That's normal. NAM is one of those "futureproof" Build games that tend to stick as many useless grass actors and use higher resolution walls and ground as 'detail' compensation for the lack of modern technology. It's also slow on Pentium II. Somehow, on the same computer, Operation Flashpoint runs the same as NAM even with a Voodoo. Hard to believe, but yeah that's pretty bad. Whoever thought peppering animated sprites completely over the map was a good idea is a bonehead.

A similar game WWII:GI (also a Team TNT/WizardWorks product) will also run as slow. Redneck Rampage also will be slow for all the hi-res artwork, but at least that doesn't dare to grass sprite every sector up.

BUILD's a fast engine itself actually, it's just the 'game logic' part in which Duke3D operates with on parsing+compiling external CON files (that NAM/RR/WW2GI are based upon directly) isn't all that optimal. Even NAM with only low-res sprites would still be bad

If you have a decent computer, you might be able to play NAM using this port, though I have not tried it myself.

Haven't tried Redneck Rampage yet, I'll download the demo to see how it performs.

But I'm somewhat glad to hear, that it's a common issue, although I'd prefer if it ran on my system 😉

Thanks for the info!
