I've been wondering what kind of socket those ceramic LCC-68 80286-and-compatible CPUs fit into - as they only have contacts underneath, not "all around the sides" like the PLCC ones, I assume they would have to "sit" on the socket's contacts, not be "surrounded" by them. If they sit on something, what holds them in place then?

Could those simply be like BGA mounts? That those needed to be soldered in?

They fit into a socket similar to PLCC, only the contacts are on on the bottom of the socket, and a metal clip holds the CPU in place. I really dislike LCC sockets, because it makes it very difficult to install CPU upgrade modules and heatsinks.

OK then, I'll stick to PLCC... maybe just collect an LCC if it comes cheap (though I usually like to successfully test what I'm collecting).

Yes, they do look pretty 🤣.
It's one of those package types that was discarded for processors, just like the long-chip-with-metal-legs-on-the-side type packages.
The 286 had many different packages, compared to any other CPU generation.

I've seen prototype images of intel 286s in a large DIP package similar to the 68K, but in ceramic with a gold top. Now that would have been cool.
