I just tried out my new LAPC-I and I must say I'm a bit disappointed. Most games work with the LAPC-I like they did with the MT-32, but I get no sound from the games that are the ultimate test of MPU-401 compatibility; Eric the Unready and Gateway.
I even get an error message that tells me "Unable to access the MT32 on IRQ channel 2", despite the LAPC-I being jumpered to use the standard IRQ 2 and port 330.
I wish I could connect my external MT-32 to the LAPC-I and see if I can get music from the games that way, but I'm missing the MCB-1 breakout box. If anyone knows how to make an LAPC-to-MIDI adapter by hand I would be grateful to know. When I tried to use one I had made myself, it started burning.
Another game that didn't work for me was "Martian Memorandum", which was completely silent. Some other games sounded funny, but I think that's because they only work with the old version of the MT-32.
So do any LAPC-I owners share my experiences with Eric the Unready, Gateway and Martian Memorandum. And if these games don't work with the internal synth, do they work with an external MT-32 connected to the LAPC-I via a MCB-1?
I'm only wondering about the LAPC-I specifically. I have another MIDI-interface that is 100% MPU-401 compatible, and using that with an MT-32 I can get perfect sound from any game.
