Hi, people!

I am playing Warcraft 2 using DOSBox in my Mac. It works OK, but if the CD is not in the drive, I only get MIDI music. If I put the CD in the drive before I start the game, the audio tracks get played correctly.

Now, my question is:
Does any one know of a way to play the audio tracks out of the HD, without the CD in the drive?

What I need is a way to rip the CD audio tracks to the HD and modify somehow the DOSBox configuration so that the game plays the music from the HD rather than from the CD drive.

Thanks!!!

Create a bin/cue of the CD and mount the .cue in DOSBox using the imgmount command.

I don't know of any MAC programs that can create a proper .cue so you'll need to do it in Windows.

Thanks, DosFreak.
What a prompt answer! 😀

I am now at work, and my Macbook is at home.
At night, when I get there, I will try your suggestion.
Whether it works or not, I will post the results.

Cheers,
Eduardo.

DosFreak:

I was thinking about your suggestion, and suddenly I had a doubt:

Should I create a BIN/CUE image of the whole disk (binary data +
audio tracks), and install the game in DOSBox using this image?

Or can I create an image of the audio tracks only, since I have
already installed the game and it is already working perfectly?

Thanks, once more.

Eduardo.

Depends on the game in WAR2's case I think it doesn't care and can be any CD audio CD.....but I'd think you'd want a backup of your full WAR2 CD.

I don't know about yours but my original CD was scratched all to hell. I eventually was able to rip the CD audio off after many many tries but it took forever. Eventually I aquired another WAR2 CD and made a better copy.

DosFreak:

I made a CUE/BIN image of the whole disk using a Windows
app and used it to reinstall Warcraft II in my Macbook using
DOSBox.

It worked like a charm!!!! 😀

The game works with audio CD music, not MIDI, and without
the CD in the drive!!!

Thank you!!!

Cheers,
Eduardo.

It takes so little to make Mac users happy (; .

P.S.: please direct hate mail to /dev/nul

P.P.S.: If you're a big fan of WCII checking out the "Battle.net" edition might be worth it. AFAIK there's a Mac version. WCII BNE is basically Warcraft II, with some added "comfort features" like double-click-on-a-unit-type-to-select-all-units-of-the-same-type.

Ha, ha. Very funny, ADDiCT! 😀

I have just recently begun using a Mac, and I must confess it is a nice machine. I am not one of those guys who "take sides".
Any machine and OS is good to me, as long as it solves the problems I need solved.

I have a PC notebook running Win 7 with an Oracle VirtualBox running Ubuntu and CentOS, and also a MacBook. There are apps I need that can only be run in Windows, some that need Linux, and to develop for iPhone/iPad I must use the Macbook.

But in the long run, I believe I will ultimately stick with the Mac...

So, I did no email>/dev/nul, 'cause this ain't no "hate mail"... 😉

About the WCII BNE:
I have just searched Battle.net. I found WoW and WCIII, but no WCII...
Anyway, I would not pay again for a game I already own, even if the new edition carried some facilities.

Cheers!
Eduardo.

Yes, the CD is for both PC and Mac.

One more reason not to buy the Battlet.net version:
The audio CD tracks in the original WCII CD are WAY
better than the MIDI music!!! 😁

Hmmm, it's been a while since I've played the BNE. I'm pretty sure though it's not using MIDI, but "streamed" music. I bet the music is close to or identical to the CDDA of the original WCII. The quality of the MIDI soundtrack depends on which soundfont you're using. I guess Blizzard didn't really write own pieces for the CDDA soundtrack, they've probably just rendered the MIDI soundtrack on professional equipment and maybe processed it a bit.

It sounds pretty close to me too, also, if you have (had 😜) a decent sound card the warcraft 2 midis weren't bad.

WCII BNE's music is 22khz 16bit stereo PCM streams from the data files (like Starcraft). The music is truncated to not loop twice and not fade out.

Also to mention - WCII BNE contains the expansion as well.

Another option is Wargus, which rips up your WC2 CD for some since-1998-and-still-quite-unstable-and-unpolished reverse engineered engine that can run WC2. It finally can use the CD's music (the installer rips it for you in addition to wasting time rendering broken freepats rendition of the midis included) so no TOCCATA.MOD headache anymore.
