I noticed recently that the specs for the GeForce 6 require a 300mhz processor. Since the GeForce 6 is the newest video card family with a Windows 98 driver, I thought it would probably be the ultimate video card for Win98 machines. Has anyone used one in a machine slower than 300mhz? I know it's pushing things to put a video card that supports newer than DX7 in a machine so old, I just wondered if it was possible.

For a little while I used an MSI Geforce 6200 on a Pentium III 600MHz on a BX mainboard. It worked reliably. I do not think downgrading or underclocking the CPU would suddenly make it malfunction.

I was wanting to put it in a slower machine like a socket 3,5, or 7 machine where the CPU speeds are usually well below 300mhz.

Ehh, agp card on a socket 3 machine? 😜 Well, i don´t think that the card would refuse to work with slower processors, but installing the drivers for the card might not work for god knows what reason. If the card is pci i don´t think there is any obstacle putting it in anything that has pci slots

Generally speaking, socket 3 + "new" PCI VGAs = no POST.

I think that card would be much more appropriate in a Pentium 4 with RAMBUS or DDR. I doubt most Pentium III systems and just about everything PII and older would take advantage of the card and most likely, most of the card's features and processing power would be wasted.

Same here, 6800GS on a 3ghz P4 and it's still cpu bottlenecked
