Introduction
I am testing an MSI MS5158 socket 7 motherboard, PCB version 1. Currently, it's got a Pentium MMX 233 in it (running at 200 MHz at the moment), and a couple of sticks of 60ns FPM. I managed to get a large socket A/462 cooler attached to the CPU socket. There's no need for this, but it looks good.

The mobo

1) Link to the mobo's BIOS file version 1.4. Filename is w5158v14.exe.
2) Link to the original BIOS file version 1.0, saved using Award Flash version 5.35A. Filename is awdbak.bin
3) Link to the original BIOS file version 1.0, saved using UniFlash 1.40. Filename is backup.bin
4) Link to the Stason webpage diagram for this mobo.
5) Link to the Intel chipset driver. Filename is infinst_enu.exe

Notes
1) I don't know if this is the latest version for this mobo. I discovered another version (2.1), but the release notes said that it worked for PCB version 1.1. My board is version 1, so I did not use this version. There is also another version available (2.0), but I guessed that was for the PCB revision 1.1 as well. The latest 1.x BIOS version I could find was 1.4, but I only briefly looked on DriverGuide. MSI had nothing, inside their poor legacy archive section.

2) This exe package includes an AwdFlash utility, appropriate to the era of this version 1.4 BIOS file, circa 1998. It is version 5.35A. It worked OK. It saved a back up BIOS file, and also flashed the board OK.

3) I ran UniFlash, and I was going to use it to flash the board, but I decided at the last minute to "risk" using the AwdFlash utility. Luckily it worked without any problems.

4) Jumper JP2 needs to be in the "enabled" position for BIOS flashing to be allowed.

5) This seems to be the same chipset driver package I use for my i440BX slot 1 motherboard, when I am using Windows 95. I am surprised by this.

After chipset installation
The "? PCI Bridge" device has disappeared which is good, and extra resources have now appeared in the System area. The chipset driver I used is in link 5 above.

Questions

if you have any i430 series boards, I have the latest triones drivers.... they are newer than anything you'll find out there... that's because my copy is legit! 😁 They work fine even in virtualized DOS systems, but some stuff may interfere with it and causes lockups on boot

Please can you explain a bit about these Triones drivers? Do they replace the Intel chipset driver (link 5 above) that I am using? Or are they for Windows 3.x? Thanks a lot.

I did some looking around, it's impossible to just browse through their stuff...NOT! Found a clever way, all you have to do is use the MSI search thingy and search for "MS-" 😜

Or just search for "." (a dot 😜)

Unfortunately that method returns 0 results for MS-5158.

True. But it might help someone else down the road.

I'm thinking if there "maybe" is some forgotten MSI ftp server which still has this old stuff?

Oh I was just browsing - nothing in particular. It would be nice to double-check that the latest BIOS for the PCB version 1 mobo is version 1.4 - that kind of thing...

Think it would be possible to flash a BIOS from another TX board on it?
Perhaps even one that's unofficially patched for the K6 mobiles?
If doing this, better save the current BIOS in a safe place.

ehh.....woops? 😊

But anyway, it might be possible to flash a BIOS file from a different manufacturer to the board, if it's an updated BIOS you seek. Seems easier then trying to mod the BIOS file by yourself.

check this page for a list of K6-III+ compatible boards:
http://compatlist.k6plus.com/

you can try to contact this guy to make a modded BIOS that supports the K6-III:
http://web.inter.nl.net/hcc/J.Steunebrink/k6plus.htm

the triones drivers replace the intel ones... depending on your setup, one can be faster than the other... but intel drivers only supports win95... the triones drivers support DOS, NT, OS/2, SCO unix, win9x... if your windows already has built in DMA mode support, the standard drivers may give you better performance anyway
