Minecraft is kinda bittersweet for me.
Now don't get me wrong, I LIKE Minecraft. On the one hand, it's a fun, highly addictive game where you're encouraged to build things and explore a massive world. It allows the capacity to build all sorts of stuff if you're willing to delve into its mechanics and learn the best ways to find all the rare stuff. Once "Creative" mode is returned in the coming updates, people who just want to build stuff won't have to spend hours exploring first, but the exploring will still be there all the same.
On the other hand, I had an idea for a game almost just like this one back in 2005... so I'm kinda mad at myself for not at least attempting to make it... >_>;
After seeing the success of Terraria though, (which is also a fun game), I have a newfound hope for my idea since it seems any block-based, world construction/deconstruction game has a chance so long as it retains a level of originality, so I'm really considering a sudden gear change with my programming projects so that, besides ADG, all of my side work goes into this idea.
That said, speaking as a programmer, some of the updates to Minecraft have broken things in ways that just don't make sense. I mean, one particular update made it impossible for clay to generate unless a particular two block-coordinates matched. Another update added auto-saving every three seconds which was fine for most people, but for me, it caused my framerate to stutter like clockwork every 3 seconds, so for the moment I have to use a mod that allows me to change the auto-save rate to something less noticable. (I have it set to 3 minutes.) I can forgive problems like this since Minecraft is still in beta, and I bought it knowing it was still beta, but I'm worried that when v1.0 hits, there will still be too many bugs and people who buy in will start requesting refunds, especially since the classic version on the website has virtually no relation to the full version anymore, using far less memory, CPU and GPU power, and thus can't be used as a reference to know if the full game will work properly or not. :/
