Just getting back into gaming as have been living overseas for a few years so had to keep my positions to a minimum.
This has also meant my gaming interest finished roughly around the same time (2006) and after years of having to “make do” on laptops I’m keen to get back into it 😀
I read the post Building the Ultimate Win9x/DOS Retro Gaming Machine – Redux
Building the Ultimate Win9x/DOS Retro Gaming Machine - Redux
Which was a good place to start but still need a bit of guidance as I’m getting more confused the more I research 😕
I’m basically looking for Win98 box that drops into Dos so may need to have 2 Graphics or sound cards, 1 for Dos 1 for Win.
Most demanding games will
Windows: Tomb Raiders, NFS 3, 4 & Porsche.
DOS: NFS1, Duke3d
Sound wise I want to get the best for both newer games like the above but also the older midi games including Doom/Heritic/Hexin Dune 2, Duke2, Epic Pinball Price of Persia, Rampart, Raptor, Warlords, Wolf 3D and a few other Apogee games I cant remember most likely
For the parts list
M/B (All are Slot 1 does it matter that much its not Socket 7)
Option 1 Asus P2Z-B
Pro 2 Isa slots Max Ram 512mb
Con ZX chipset (Will I really notice?)
Option 2 Gateway Tabor2
http://support.gateway.com/s//MOTHERBD/INTEL/ … /m00446nv.shtml
Pro is it’s a BX chipset
Con only has 1 Isa slot, max Ram 384MB (Will I notice the difference between 384/512)
CPU. Currently best I have is a P2 450 or a Xeon 400 (Can I even use that?) Thinking of upgrading to a P3 if it’ll make much difference?
Drives
Whatever CD-Rom is lying around that works. I’ll more likely put a large HDD in and no-cd the games. I can always copy across the network from working CD drives anyway
Graphics Card
This is where I get real confused! Windows needs something for DirectX for NFS but I think Tombraider really wants Glide & Dos wants VESA support for Duke3d and NFS1. Ideas?
