Music in Settlers 2 Gold is jerking, and general sound is laggy too, some sounds also disappear. At the same time everything runs normally when I install SoundFX, but I cannot afford it here 🙁

System is Athlon 1700Xp/256Mb ram, Gigabyte motherboard with built-in normally functional soundcard, running W2k Advanced Server sp4.

What can I do?

One more weird problem; I have followed advice in the first post and installed update 1 (I just copied the files, no installation proggie was supplied, is that normal?), and LaunchPad.

I did everything like it is described and I am using admin account.
There's Run With VDMS link on right-click menu, but *where is LaunchPad*? E.g. how do I get to fancy GUI configuration.

And please don't tell me it's amoung VDM Shortcuts, cause I dunno where are those too. I have been searching everywhere, so let's just assume that W2k just loaded prefs, and now I see taskbar and desktop, nothing else. I need to get to LaunchPad and I dunno how.

Hello,

LaunchPad itself came with install.bat - run that to install LaunchPad. It adds a "Run with VDMS" with a musical note next to it.

In 99.9% of cases games that work with SoundFX also work with VDMSound and vice-versa. You may need to decrease the DMA period in VDMSound if sound is jerky, and make sure nothing "funny" is running in the background (like ongoing antivirus scans or disk search indexing).

Cheers,
V.

Nothing funny is running.

Where do I set VDMSound up? there's no setup utility, and not even .ini file or something alike.

Speaking of launchpad - you mean, the whole almost 4 Mb .dll has functionality of one context menu item? I was expecting to see GUI based setup... afair I have even seen it described somewhere but damned if I know how to get to it.

One (or more) context menu items can start a lot of GUI action... 😉
