I just installed my GUS pnp 1.0 and tried the sound blaster fm emulation. It sounds pretty wrong 🤣. I think im gonna link some recordings. Whats your experience with the Gus in this regard? Are there variations in quality for the different versions of Gus ?

Obviously, games that make the most use of customizing the OPL chip sound the worst. Dune was horrible but I tried Wolfenstein and it was not too bad. But VERY different!

EDIT: Samples Added, 5 songs, 3 versions of each =15 files
The true OPL3 version, the SBOS emulation version and the MEGAEM version.
Enjoy!

I DARE YOU TO TRY CYBERSPHERE 🤣

Sounds pretty terrible on my GUS classic. I think it just tries to map the FM sounds to one of the instruments in the wavetable.

Bio Menace is one that sticks out in my mind as sounding wrong. I don't think I tried that many different games to be honest, I just stuck an SB16 in for OPL stuff 😜

That's what i thought it was doing also. However the concept could be pretty interesting if one could have custom control over this, and optimize it for each game. Not that i do not like the sound of the real Opl chips, on the contrary. But it could be an interesting feature to mess around with.

Ill get some recordings of that Gus pretty soon!

Can this OPL trainwrecky GUS stuff be done in DOSBox? It's a software 338-reading TSR right?

I suppose so, download the drivers and try MEGAEM and SBOS

Like DonutKing said, it is quite possible that it would work. SBOS is a TSR; i do not know what the 338-reading part means though.
I have been using SBOS so far as i could not get MEGAEM to work: emm386 issues... I really want to compare both. That will have to wait til tomorrow cuz now its late and im going to sleep 😜

In the meantime enjoy this special SBOS version of E1M1 😁

Oh and yes, its lossless flac. So you dont lose any of the "quality" 🤣

SBOS requires NMI which is not supported in DOSBox. There is a patch but it doesnt work well.

I guess you use MS-DOS 7 or newer. Something was changed there in EMM386 that makes it incompatible. Use EMM386 from MS-DOS 6.x or QEMM.

For generating an own OPL emulation instrument mapping just do a custom bank for megaem using a custom ini file. (This applies to GUS classic, large.bnk should be generated for a 1 MB GUS)
Though don't forget to switch bank files again if you use GM emulation again.

I was using 6.22 actually, there was a emmfix.bat included with the gus drivers. There was also a emm386 version included, which i tried. Did not appear to work, i was gonna try with PCdos today. If that does not work ill try to find Qemm as i have no other version of dos.

I just tested a GUS PnP with MegaEM 3.11 and EMM386 version 4.45 from MS-DOS 6 and it works fine.
I can not test the SB emulation though as I have a real SB16 in the same system that blocks resources.
I don't want to disassemble the system.

Using GUS for OPL emulation somehow reminds me of playing back samples on C64s video chip.

Oddly enough, I think the Gravis Ultrasound's simulated OPL3(is it simulated OPL3 using the wavetable like on the Ensoniq Soundscape and AudioPCI?) really doesn't sound all that bad. One thing's for sure, I think it just runs all over any Ensoniq sound card's simulated OPL3. That's just horrible. I wanna hear X-Wing on this thing.

Hehehe, well, i would say its purely wavetable mapping, like others...
To me its horrible, games that use the most of the OPL chip are the ones that comes out the worst with Gus emulation. Dune and Cybersphere are totally butchered... I could not even get descent to work... And possibly a good thing, might have gotten nightmares...

I knew you would come up with Xwing at some point 😉
I briefly tried it with the SBOS and actually it was not as bad as with some others games.
I felt like i was pretty much ''Done'' with gus FM emulation recordings as you kinda get the idea already. IF i had one song to record from Xwing, what would be the choice ?

If you had to record just one song, it'd be the second combat song. That one sounds horrible on any Ensoniq sound card and I'm hoping the Gravis Ultrasound sounds better.

And now... *looks for cheap Gravis Ultrasound*
