as many of you already know, the SB 2.0 requires 3 chips to enable Game Blaster/CMS compatibility. Two Phillips SAA1099 which are pretty easy to find, and one PAL chip that is Creative proprietary.

Chuck(G) over at vintage computer has managed to dump the contents of the missing chip.

pin11=11 pin12=12 pin13=13 pin14=14 pin15=15 pin16=16 pin17=17
pin18=18 pin19=19 vcc=20

EQUATIONS

; pin12 = nc
; note that pin 7 8 and 9 are tied to gnd on the PAL socket

pin13.trst = /pin4
pin13 = pin7 ; IO CH RDY/ tristated
/pin14 = pin11*pin3*/pin2 ; CS/ for YM3812
/pin15 = /pin5*/pin3*/pin2 ; CS/ for first SAA1099P
/pin16 = /pin5*/pin3*/pin1 ; CS/ for second SAA1099P
/pin17 = /pin11 + /pin6 ; U14, 74LS74, PS2
/pin18 = /pin5*/pin3*/pin1 + /pin5*/pin3*/pin2 ; U14, D2
/pin19 = pin5 ; U14, CLK2

If you run this through EQN2JED then burn a GAL16v8 in an appropriate programmer you should be able to get the CMS upgrade working.

Very nice!

Now we just need to find someone capable of producing enough for the retro community 😀

Well you can get a cheap programmer off ebay that will do the job - search for G540 or TOP853, both are USB and work with Windows and can be had for $50 AUD delivered. I'm not sure which one is better.

If someone can recommend one or the other, or a better programmer in a similar price range, please share your knowledge 😀

You can buy the GAL16v8 chips from here http://www.futurlec.com/ICPAL.shtml

I've been thinking of buying a programmer and some GALs for an Amiga Phoenix 1000 board I've been working on.... this gives me another really good reason to do it 😀 I've also got 2x CT1350 cards that could use this.

A bargain considering you couldn't even buy a 2.0 upgrade kit before 😀

It's quoted in my post.... you gotta save the quoted text as an EQN file, and run it through EQN2JED.exe which can be found via google.

If that's too much effort here's one I prepared earlier
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9151127/SB2CMS.JED

I don't have a programmer so I haven't tried it.

If you have a read of the article at vintage computer you can see that its mainly pretty simple logic. Not like an EPROM with kilobytes of binary code 😀

CONFIRMED WORKING!

My programmer and some GAL chips arrived today, so I got busy and programmed the JED file onto a couple of GAL16V8D chips, then stuck them and two SAA1099 chips into both of my Sound Blaster 2.0's 😀

You do require the CMS driver here: http://cloudschatze.googlepages.com/CMSDRV.com which isn't included in the Creative downloadable driver pack, but once that's done the CMS support is functional. Tested Loom and Monkey Island 1 so far, works perfectly, although the sound seems a lot more filtered and nowhere near as loud, as a real CMS/Game Blaster.

Time for some recordings!

I don't think there are ANY SB 2.0 + CMS recordings out and about. Its quite possible that it sounds different to a real Game Blaster or a 1.5 + CMS.

I believe the 2.0 is more filtered compared to a 1.5 in general.

My 1.5 recordings are on YouTube if you want to compare them.

I have installed my GAL also. Arent there any test programs for testing that Game blaster part?

Would love some CM recordings off a 2.0 card...

I still haven't gotten around to doing this upgrade. The two Philips chips have also became dearer...

Here you go then:

Monkey Island on a SB 2.0 CT1350 with CMS upgrade:

Monkey Island on a Game Blaster CT1300:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9151127/mi1%20game%20blaster.mp3

To be honest I can't really hear a difference between the two recordings except the SB2.0 is a bit nosier with some background hiss/crackle. That's probably due to the digital output picking up some interference from inside the case, which the game blaster is immune to since it doesn't have digital output. I did perform a noise removal on both tracks in Audacity.

I can't replicate my earlier result, where I claimed the SB2.0 was more filtered/softer, perhaps it was the speakers/headphones I was using at the time.

Yea I can't tell any difference either...

I looked at the frequency spectrum and no sign of any filter...

Thanks for the recordings!

Funny how this SB 2.0 CMS project has finally come to an end. For years people have speculated and wished to duplicate this chip and now it's done...
