Up until now, only the BSOD was poked fun at

NOW, lets rip DOS/4GW a new one and mock the crap outta it in this new article
http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/DOS4GW

Its not done yet but if anyone would like to add crap to it then please be my guess. 😊

I remember getting scared of the DOS/4GW crash in 2006 or 2007 when I was playing the shareware release of Descent at the age of 12 on DOSBox and I remember hoping straight out of the chair and scared to play the game because of it. 😳

I don't get it. You were annoyed that a game originally written for hardware ten years older than your system wasn't working properly in a drastically different software environment, so you blamed a common generic component that probably worked fine at the time the program was originally written?

That whole uncyclopedia thing seems like a total waste of time (Wikipedia can be a waste of time, too, but in a good way 😉)

This.

I'm not exactly an expert on this type of programming but I'd also bet that these DOS/4GW errors are mostly the fault of the game's programmers.

I think it's more likely the fault of the user trying to run a dos game under win9x instead of booting into dos mode- because that's the only time I recall seeing this error.

Besides, all the best games used DOS4GW so seeing that little copyright message usually meant you were in for a treat 😀

I'm sure DOS4GW errors were caused by many issues. Hardware instability and bugs, TSR/device driver combinations and general instabilities, running DOS games in 9x, game bugs, etc.

DOS era fun things.

Yeah, till Win9x's API and DirectX came into play, DOS-era programmers were forced to write different drivers, to support specific hardware, for a single game. Sound Card support being the most common example.

Later Dos games made use of somewhat early DOS APIs like this DOS4GW written to take advantage of memory implementation in programs in newer systems. Other example being the Universal Vesa Bios Extension (UNIVBE) driver for graphics. Instead of writing drivers to access the hardware directly, the programmers were able to make use of these, like the UNIVBE, which behaves as the mediator between the hardware and the software.

But even with the presence of these, games still suffered from a multitude of unforeseen hardware-driver incompatibilites. Especially some TSRs, as swaaye mentioned. TSRs were dreaded when it came to Dos games those days, even though they are extremely useful otherwise.

Many games came with some sort of BOOTDISK creator or a guide to create it in the manual to help run some games which are very picky with what TSRs and loaded drivers were present concurrently. These were intended to run only the most basic elements needed to run the game, and nothing else.

As for the uncyclopedia thing, I wish they remove any resemblance to the Wikipedia website. And I also hope the search engines will NOT list the results in the beginning page. Newcomers and unsuspecting individuals will be falsely led to the site. The site may be fun to read, but the site should also have a permanent banner on top and bottom of every page mentioning "Warning: This site is a joke in the poorest taste. Read at your own discretion." Most of the "info" available there seem to come from half-baked dimwits and/or school/college dropouts.

definitely agreed, it doesn't hold a candle to Encyclopedia Dramatica - now that's some serious next-level shit.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't think Skyrim is deserving of all the praise the internet is heaping on it... Morrowind was by far the best game in the series 😀
