Well, since this forum is called Vogons ( 🤣 ), has anyone watched the movie? How does it hold up against the book? Most people are divided towards it, others say that it's completely Americanized, others say it's a great movie...

Hahaha. Straight to the point I see.
To be honest, I've never read the book, watched the series or played the text adventure, however I would like to see what it's about. I love British humour and this one seems to be full of it ! 😀

if you never read the book, then you might like the movie.

When the movie came out, I watched it with some of my nerdy friends, who all had read the book and/or seen the TV series before.
We went in with the usual prejudices, expecting a watered down story and ruined gags covered with expensive CGI, but then it turned out to be quite enjoyable. For an American remake, this one is not that bad at all!

Watch the TV mini-series instead.

I felt the movie was kinda hard to follow, but otherwise not too bad. Then again, I've never read the book and from what I'm told, the book has a LOT more content to it, so I guess it depends really on if you prefer to watch stuff or read stuff.

I like both, so I'm just going to lower my expectations and watch the movie for the time being. Thanks!

I didn't mind it much.

Garth Jennings, the director, is primarily responsible for music videos, and it kind of shows.

I thought the movie was fun but no alternative to the books by a long chalk.

Never read the book, never watched the show, never played the game. I thought the movie was funny. I'm sure it takes away from most of the details but then most movies do. I was entertained.

the book was much better, but the movie is a nice comedic relief, even though all sorts of things changed and it's watered down

I've read all six books, seen the movie, watched the TV series. Haven't heard the original radio drama though.

The first two books are really good, the third is decent, the next two I wasn't really fussed on. The new one by Eoin Colfer is decent too.

The TV series is excellent if you can get past the 80's-ness of it (I love that kind of thing 😀) It's really very faithful to the first two books. The movie is ok but yes, they chopped and changed a lot of it.

Just finished watching it. Wasn't bad, it was enjoyable for the most part, although I can see what Gemini meant by "hard to follow". The story is quite interesting, I might consider getting the book and reading it sometime!

The book is a singular experience. It took me a long time to really appreciate it. I know the first page by heart; you never know when you'll be called upon to deliver a monologue. 😉

It's pretty different. I can see why a lot of people didn't like it.

I remember seeing the TV series after I read the books in the 80's and thought it was so bad. Might be fun to watch now?

I remember thinking the TV series was good, very similar to the radio series. That was 20 years ago though. The movie was disappointing, had some good ideas in it though.

I don't see how it can be an American film and qualify to be nominated for the Best British Film award in the UK.

I quite enjoyed the movie especially as I too watched it with very low expectations. Marvin was really done great 😉

BUT I wouldn't watch it twice. When it aired on TV last year I only took a glimpse again and that was fun but didn't capture me enough to stay tuned.
