I have these 8-bit ISA cards with appropriate breakout cables:

Roland MPU-IPC-T
Music Quest MQX-32M

In my 386 box, I get nice music on my MT32 when I play Lost Vikings using either of them.

Today I tried a new box, with an Athlon 700 in an MSI MS-6167 board running Windows 98.

Putting either of these cards in, Windows has drivers built-in though the Music Quest is a bit more creaky to install [doesn't get detected and the machine has to be rebooted after setting resources].

But on this faster machine the MT32 seems to have a low volume and not to be producing all the music. It's a bit difficult logistically [well, impossible right now] to set this machine up alongside the 386 for a proper comparison.

I tested both cards in each machine, neither sounds different to the other but once the 386 is playing the music sounds right rather than sounding well... odd. Like it's not all there. I dunno, maybe I will try this again some time [right now I'm just relieved the mqx finally works].

I'm assuming this is because the athlon is too fast but it was no better when I disabled L1 and L2 cache.

Could it be a PSU voltage issue? Now I think of it, this may have been the PSU I was using when an SB2 appeared not to work in a faster machine.

Not a PSU issue. But have a look in the BIOS for ISA bus speed and things like that.

I also know that Roland released the MPU401AT specifically to work with faster machines. The MPU-IPC-T is an older model.

SB2 cards require a -5V rail on the PSU. Please check the sticker on your PSU, to see what amps are provided on this rail. If it's not listed, it won't have this rail. However, I'm fairly sure that SB2 cards don't work in faster machines anyway!

Regarding the MT-32. Well, this is almost certainly a "red herring", but the internal 8-bit LAPC-i sound card requires a -5V rail!

Ok will do.

I thought the MPU-IPC-T was also supposed to work with faster things according to something I read [Great Hierophant's site]. Of course a 386 was fast once upon a time 🤣.

Ok thanks, that's probably why my sb2 didn't work in the p4 board then.

That finally solved the mystery why my 2.0 cards wouldn't work on a Pentium and Pentium 3 machine, but work fine in the 486 Acer...

Strange why only the 2.0 has this requirement and the 1.5 and Pro work fine.

I've had several Roland MPU-IPC-T cards run fine on Pentium II machines with BX boards. This was under DOS though.
