Quite a few people on here are building DOS machines. What are you using it for? Playing games?
I discovered not everything DOS runs under windows 95 or 98. I hit a "glitch" in Terminator Future Shock that I cannot get around on faster machines. I also discovered that some of the programming I was doing with Turbo C and Turbo Assembler did not work the same under Windows.
So - what are you using DOS for?

I just like to tinker. I grew up with DOS and I find it fun/nostalgic to fiddle around with it 😀

I use it for almost the same.. Using dos for games, that wouldnt run on windows 95 / 98.. Just what the games are designed for.

I don't keep any old machines around at home. Stopped keeping a machine with MS-DOS on it back 2001.
I use DOS in VM software and DOSBox for DOS games.
Still use DOS for bootable CD media for troubleshooting\bios updates.
I do have several laptops I keep at work for testing games when issues occur in DOSBox or in Windows but the oldest one of those is a P166 so not very ancient. I keep several images around for those DOS/NT4/9x, etc.
I use it for old games.
Until recently, I used it on an old Pentium 120 laptop with DOS and Telix in lieu of a proper serial terminal for programming switches and routers. That's not part of my job any more though, so it lives in a drawer now.

I feel safer doing bios updates in dos, but more and more are coming out for windows only.
Fdisk as that scrappy few MB that WinXP cant partition just annoys me.

I had a 386sx machine as a kid and still want a pure DOS one to play my old games.
Nostalgia, nothing beats the real thing, craziness and some more technical reasons I guess...

Games / nostalgia here too. Combined with carefully selected period hardware it's the closest I'll ever get to a time machine.
DOS is for awesome. I mainly use it for old games, tinkering with old hardware, etc. As a hobby I like collecting old parts and systems (not just PCs, game consoles as well), and for older machines, DOS is appropriate for the time as Win95 or later might be too new for them. There's also something much more tactile and satisfying about using the command line that's cooler than simply dragging and dropping stuff in Windows.
Plus there's also retro games, getting them to run on vintage hardware is awesome, and just getting them to work as they did 15-20+ years ago is fun. Plus, a 486 DOS box is really quite awesome since it'll run most DOS era games(on genuine period hardware), however there will be older games from the XT/286 era that run too fast on a 486 even with the Turbo button off(Stellar 7 comes to mind), and a slower machine is needed (which 386's work great for). Plus you can get into even more hardcore retro stuff like Monochrome and CGA/EGA graphics and monitors, the list goes on.

i have a 386 to play certain old games on period-correct-ish hardware, and to fiddle with isa soundcards alongside that.
i always hated windows 3.1 when it was new, and still do. so dos it is.
dos has some nostalgia value as i used at work when it was new. back then i didn't play pc games though [quake changed that but i played that with win95 on a p100].
Many years ago I decided to discontinue DOS and run 98 on everything. Fortunately I saved the programs - I have had fun setting it up 😁

For me its mostly fun and nostalgic feelings. But i also still use my HP 100LX which is powered by MS-DOS 5.0. The 100LX (and 200LX as well of course) is imho still one of the best PDAs around as it is compatible with all DOS/CGA appz and games and also includes spreadsheet and word processor which i use a lot. But main killer argument is probably that it usually runs like 2 month on 2 standard AA batteries and i can easily swap data with my local PC though a CF card i use in a PCMCIA CF adaptor in the 100LX. But i also like old computers in general, love fumbling with my old 1988 Toshiba T3200, nothing beats EGA games on an orange monochrome Plasma screen.
I don't have a dedicated DOS machine, but since Windows can't run all my DOS games in a satisfactory manner, I'm contemplating on building one
