Hello,

I have an old windows 95 game called shivers. I have tried everything to get it to work. At first it was telling me is it not compatible with my version of windows 64bit (I have windows 7 home premium) So I tried the whole switching the compatibility. Well then it would look like it would start to install, get the black screen that pops up, then it dissapears then nothing.

I downloaded dosbox. Now I am not totally stupid when it comes to computers but i am getting lost... I did manage to mount my d drive, all the way to where I put setup.exe and it said I need windows to run this program.

I am not sure if I am doing this right.

I am trying to run my game from my CD/DVD drive.. which is D:\ I am not even sure if I am getting the location right, d:\setup.exe?

I would love if anyone could give me some help.. I am really hoping I can run this game.
I will warn you I tried the step by step instructions and still got a bit confused.. Like I said I made it all the way to where I switched z to c then to my drive d then I don't know what to do or type in.

Thank you in advance

According to MobyGames there are at least some versions of Shivers that support Win 3.x, but you'll have to install Win 3.x in DOSBox before you can install the game. There is a guide for doing that in the guides section of the forum.

Shivers is a Windows only game. It runs best in Win9x. I have not tried it in Win3x in DOSBox recently, but the game never seemed to like Win3x. It does run nicely in XP Mode, but XP Mode is only available for Win7 Pro and higher, well worth the $40 or so higher price over Home Premium. You can try another VM. Some VMs are free, but you will still need to purchase a copy of an earlier version of Windows for all of them except XP Mode.

"XP Mode" is just a VHD with Windows XP in it.

Virtual PC for Windows 7 works fine on the Home version of Windows 7.

Although why you would even want to use Virtual PC (for Windows 7) is beyond me

You need to install Windows 3.1 within DOSBox. There is a guide describing it here.

I had no problem running Shivers in DOSBox with Windows 3.1. However, for Shivers 2 and a few other games I found that Virtual PC 2007 with Windows 3.1 installed worked better.
