Anybody know what's wrong? I think it's trying to detect the CD drive, but failing. I also can't open the CD drive tray. That's weird, because it was working fine with the old HDD and I think I've it set to the same settings (master).

Here's the old HDD + dipswitches:

Here's the new HDD. I've only added one dipswitch to the Master col. (without it, it detects neither the HDD nor the CD drive)

My BIOS:

edit: this is the CD drive. Mine is configured as slave, see image:

That's just a random image I grabbed online, but it's configured the same way as mine.

When it detects the HDD does it work ok without the cd-rom?

That is a socket 7 motherboard, perhaps the HDD is too big? Have you tried limiting the HDD?

Hm, just disconnected the CD drive and the exact same thing happened. Maybe it's too big, as you say. How do I limit the HDD? Do I add a dipswitch to the "cap limit"?

Yes, you must put a jumper in the "cap limit" position. It will limit the hdd to 32GB and probably work.

I added a dipswitch to the cap limit col but, unfortunately, no change. Weird! Maybe I should just see if I can find a smaller HDD somewhere?

Try just one more thing. Go to bios and if it has an option to auto detect hdd, do it. I had a similar problem once, it would hang in post but if hdd was set in bios it would work fine.

With this HDD attached I can't even get into the BIOS. I disconnected it and went into the BIOS and made sure autodetect was turned on (it already was). I also enabled "32-bit mode". But unfortunately, it doesn't work. Thankfully I've got a neighbor who probably has a good HDD for me, I'll just trade it for one of these 40GB drives I got for free. 😀

Just set BIOS to 'no HDD', disable auto detection, but keep the Controller on. Then if you boot a NT based OS it will auto detect the HDD on kernel initialization.
