AWE64 and QSound

Hi,

I was looking at Creative's site for AWE64 Gold DOS software, and I noticed an "Advanced Signal Processing upgrade (CSP.SYS v1.13)". I tried it, but when the driver loads, it says it can't find the CSP. However, my SB16 directory now has QSound Software and Creative Mosaic now has a QSound option. However, apart form one sound in Mosaic (which may actually be a different sound, if you know what I mean 😀), I don't notice any difference. I found a slightly updated version (1.14) which also didn't work. When I try the QSound DOS software, it says there's a low level driver error.

I didn't think the AWE64 had the CSP or QSound support? There was a utility that identified what chips the sound card has, but the link is broken I can't find it anywhere.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks

Can't help you with the QSound. I did notice a tickbox for something 3D related in the mixer utility, but it didn't do much for me.

If you're interested in adding a bit of life and richness to FM music, enable Chorus and Reverb.

I made a video here:

And it sounds quite nice...

the dsp/csp is actually a plcc square ic which many sound blaster 16s and a few others had sockets for, and very few ever were made or sold. You're trying to run a driver for hardware not on your card.

I had one once, I miss it.

I think you're right in saying that it doesn't support it. This says there's no CSP chip socket (though I actually have CT4540). This has confirmed what I suspected when I first saw it: that Creative don't seem to know what they're doing 😀.

Anyway, thanks for the info and the link. If only I could find that utility... (I think the filename's sndid.com)

BTW, I do notice some difference when I enable the 3D Stereo Enhancement in the mixer.

QSound support was dropped since a certain driver revision, so even if you HAVE the chip on the card, it is useless for DOS games. AFAIK only the flight sim TFX can produce surround effects but you need to fiddle around with the correct driver. Please search queststudios forum for relevant threads.

So did Creative replace QSound support with E-mu 3D Positional Audio?

And I thought some newer games (such as Dungeon Keeper 2) used QSound?

As I said it's the 3D Stereo Enhancement. It "increases depth and breadth in perceived audio". it also eliminates crosstalk. I do notice a difference (not a huge one, but a difference all the same). See here

Thanks! I totally missed your comment 😒

Sounds like it makes sense to have this turned on.

What do you think about Chorus and Reverb? I was blown away. It sounds like having a different sound card and way more sophisticated than plain OPL music.

I think Reverb and Chorus do indeed enhance the quality of both wavetable synthesis and FM synthesis, although I usually leave things at their default settings unless I really like something. That doesn't mean I don't experiment though 😀.

I remember TheMAN mentioning about a QSOund patch in this forum...need to search.

My original SB32 disks has a QSound option in the AWE Control Panel. Later versions dropped it. I wrote to Creative long time ago asking about the QSound support, and I got a reply saying that only older drivers has these and later drivers do not have and they did not intend to re-introduce it.
