I was having a look in one of my old computer magazines from the mid 90's and there was mention of an AudioWave 16 sound card, which - according to the article - is "Roland MPU401" compatible.

I read that to mean "intelligent mode" but it seems unlikely - anyone have one of these cards? I can't find much info on them.

Almost all cards come with the Roland "MPU-401 Compatible" tag. They just don't mention explicitly that these are not compatible with the "Intelligent Mode".

It actually doesn't matter to majority of people. Only when it comes to certain games that specifically make use of the LA portion of the MT-32/MT-100/CM-32L/CM-64/CM-500 that will not play as intended. Otherwise all these cards are perfectly alright with the Sound Canvas series, Yamaha XG synthesizers and so on.
