I have my pc's on a network at home, usually meaning:

athlon(1) running 98
phenom(1) running xp
phenom(2) running 7
386 running wfwg3.11
p4(1) running 2000
p4(2) running 98se
laptop running xp

Until recently, all boxes could see each other except the 386 and the 7 box.

The 386 I eventually got access to from one of the others, turned out it was an 802.2/802.3 issue. More importantly my 7 box is in effect my backup and file server.

So, today I replace p4(2) with athlon(2) running 98se.

I have these problems:

1. Although everything seems to have web access, the 7 box can see no other boxes at all. I don't recall changing anything...

2. Athlon(1) can see the laptop, and can "find" phenom(1). It can "find" the 7 box but as usual no password seems to work. So maybe that's as before - but why can it see one xp box but not the other?

3. Athlon(2), though freshly installed and with a working web, can see no other boxes, cannot be see by them, and cannot share folders [right-click etc] even though file sharing is installed. It has no firewall either.

Accessing my router shows all these boxes have ip addresses [of course, how else can they access the web].

Could anyone provide some pointers here please?

I have tried 7's troubleshooters, I have reinstalled all networking components on athlon(2) a couple of times, and I have done some googling but it looked like it wasn't going to help [or at least, not without spending hours trying to sort wheat from chaff]. I have also taken off password protection on home connections for the 7 box and tried it with and without homegroup.

Hmm. It's been a while, but here are some ideas:

Are you logging in with a username and password on athlon(2) ? Is it configured in the network control panel to login as a "client for microsoft networks" and not as "Windows logon" ?

Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled on phenom(1) ? How about on phenom(2) ? (Apparently you can still do that in Windows 7.)

Yes and yes.

Aha! That seems to have done it - athlon(1), phenom(2) and phenom(1) can now all see each other.

I dunno, I fiddled with some settings but mainly to do with passwords. I think it was the netbios over tcpip on the xp box that fixed this. I probably changed that without realising the consequences [or conceivably, by accident] the other day when trying to connect to the 386.

Many thanks!

Edit: Uninstalling and reinstalling the NIC on athlon(2) fixed the problem with no network places icon.

By the way, IIRC, the win9x "computer browser" isn't compatible with the later OSs.
In other words - 2000/Xp/Win7 PCs can't see the shared folders etc if the master browser is win9x PC.
So - go to control panel/network/file and printer sharing/properties and set the master browser=disabled.

This is the part where I give up and run a Win98 VirtualPC on the 7 to transfer files.
