I'm currently trying to play a german game called "Pumuckl: Fangt den Klabauter". To do this I installed Windows 3.11 in my DOSBox, it runs wonderful and thanks to this forum I even got the music to work. I noticed something that doesn't work, though, and that are the backgrounds.

The game is baiscally a Lode Runner clone and without the backgrounds the background is just black, which looks pretty dull. When I try to look at the background pictures on the CDRom they are in the .pic format, which I can't open on my Windows 7 system. When I try to open it in Windows 3.11 with Quicktime, which is normally associated with the .pic format I just get an error message saying "Could not get picture from file. Possibly not a picture file". I am pretty certain that these are the background images, because they are titled "back001.pic" to "back050.pic" and there are 50 levels in the game.

As far as I can see there is no way to install the game on the system and you have to run it from CD every time you want to play it so I can't change anything in the setup. I'm suspecting that there are specific drivers missing but I have no clue which that would be.

I hope you can help me to at least open these files.

Is this game support CGA? Any links for this game?

If the game cdrom is a PC/Mac hybrid disc and you're mounting an image of it with IMGMOUNT, you may be running into an issue with associated files. You can check this by doing a DIR command in DOSBox to see if there are two of each .PIC file. If there are indeed duplicate file names, workarounds are to either use an SVN build of DOSBox, or mount the image in a virtual cdrom like Alcohol or Daemon Tools and then use the MOUNT command in DOSBox to mount the virtual cdrom drive.

I had Quicktime version 2.1.1 installed. Deleting that and installing the version 2.1.2 from the Windows 3.x guide didn't change anything.

What exactly is CGA? I've done a quick search and the only thing that made sense was the Color Graphics Adapter from IBM from 1981. According to Wikipedia that Adapter has a maximum resolution of 640x200 but since the game I am talking about only runs in 640x480 or 800x600 so I doubt it supports CGA. The game I am talking about is from 1998 according to an Amazon page. Unfortunately there isn't anything like a site or something like that for the game. It only came out in Germany and you can't even find videos or screenshots of how the game looks. Only the box turns up in Google picture search.

Again according to Amazon this game is only compatible with Windows 3.x and 95 not with Mac. Also if I do a dir in the folder where the background pictures are located it only shows me one of each file, not two, which further supports that. I only have the CD lying around here, not the game box. I did create a bin/cue image though because the soundtrack isn't working when I start it from CD. It is a hybrid audio/data cdrom if that helps with anything.

Just to clarify, you are doing the DIR command inside DOSBox with the image mounted by the IMGMOUNT command?

I suggested the associated files issue because content originating from Macintosh (QuickTime clearly fits that) makes it a distinct possibility; and also the error message "Could not get picture from file. Possibly not a picture file" is exactly the kind of thing that happens when the system opens and reads the associated file rather than the main file.

Actually I did the dir command on my actual game cd. After reading your post I tried it again inside the mounted image but there still is only one of each file. I didn't get around to try an SVN build and/or mounting the image in deamontools, yet, but that's what I am going to try next.

EDIT:
Also, I'm not even sure if the game really uses Quicktime. It was just a guess on my side, since the backgrounds are in the .pic format, which is normally associated with Quicktime.

I think I found the game...
It seems to load the backgrounds for me both with Dosbox 0.74 and SVN

Please tell me whether the background looks the same for you or where the backgrounds are missing (with a screenshot at best).

Also did you install WinG from the CD? At what resolution and depth are you running Windows 3.x?

Yes, that is the game I was talking about. The background is missing in the playing screen, which is the second screen. The leaves in the background aren't shown in my game and instead it is just black. You should be able to see it the way I see it when you press F3 ingame. F3 toggles the background pictures.

I'm running my Windows 3.11 at a resolution of 800x600 with 256 colors. I tried running it with 16bit but I had trouble starting it afterwards so I changed it back to 256. I ran the game with 32k, though, and the backgrounds were still missing.

I'm amazed that you found that game and even more at how dedicated you are at solving my problem. I want to thank you for that, even though I wasn't able to solve it, yet!

EDIT:
I'm going to try a fresh Windows installation tomorrow with a friends old Windows so I hope that will work better.

1 - I don't have the game.

2 - It is ILLEGAL to put any links on this forum to download commercial games.
