At my local Flea market I came across a copy of X-COM: UFO DEFENSE
for $1.00 Cd only. Anyway it'[s a silver and green disc.

I downloaded the extender from the steam forums
I ran install.exe from the UFO file with DOSBOX. Yet when it asks for a install directory it keeps saying " Invalid path".

What do I do I really want to play this game and the discs in good condition.

Where did you download the extender?
What do you mean by "from the UFO file"?
Can you describe in more detail each of the screen prompts and what you entered in response?

Ok I got the extender from a thread on the steam forums

The install.EXE is inside the file titled UFO on the X-COM: UFO DEFENSE CD

I dragged and dropped install.exe onto the dosbox shortcut which autoruns the program.

According to this UFO Extender requires Visual C++ 2008. So it won't work in DOS.

I think you mean directory.

Yeah that. I forgot what it was called but yes the directory/file entitled UFO on the CD contains the INSTALL.EXE

I only found one tutorial that did not help much on the DOSBOX WIKI.
I do not know a great deal about dosbox manual stuff, I usually do the auto run thing.

For getting started with DOSBox read this:
60 seconds guide to getting your game to run in DOSBox

Basically you would create a path to use as the C drive.
C:\DOS\GAMES

Then mount that and your CD drive.
MOUNT C C:\DOS\GAMES -t dir
MOUNT D D:\ -t cdrom

Then switch to the disc and install.
D:\
CD UFO
INSTALL
