My Youtube recording of this got a comment with a request on where to download it. It is becoming difficult to find online. So, I uploaded my backup to Mediafire.

For those who don't know about it, it's a funky fruity tech-demo of something that was supposed to turn into a game but never did. NVIDIA used it as a showcase for NV10's T&L hardware.

My little video.

It's a shame nothing came out of this (other than the tech demo of course!). It did look mighty impressive for the time and it is kinda nostalgic, even though I have known about this for 5-6 months. It just reeks of typical 1999-2000 xD
It also reminds me of Morrowind quite a bit! Which reminds me, I should try out that Morrowind Overhaul mod, it looked fantastic! 😁

I think part of the reason this didn't lead into anything is because game developers were too busy with their own engines at the time which were impressive in their own rights. Descent 3 with its Fusion Engine, supporting seamless transitions between underground and outdoor environments, came out halfway through the year, and Quake 3 came out just as the year was ending and we all know what its engine was like!

And yes, it does remind me of Morrowind quite a bit!

Hi there! Found this while trying to relive the same childhood memory. Having trouble getting this to work on windows 10, do any of yall have hay ideas?
This little demo game was so cool to me when i was a child, just exploring freely, having a good time. I am trying to get this to work to show it to my children.
if you can think of anything that would help please let me know.
Thanks in advance!

Last time I tried this was on a Windows 7 64 system with a 3090 GPU. Worked fine. Just tried it on Windows 10 64 and just a black screen, but I can hear the audio. If I run the xpro.exe under Windows 98 compatibility and then choose the non TnL graphics card option the demo will actually run. Unfortunately, I still get the black screen in fullscreen mode so I have to hit the F4 key to go to a windowed mode. As you can see pictured below there is a "capturewnd" window on the top of the gameplay window that cannot be moved/removed, so not very appealing. None of the DirectX wrappers I tried seemed to help. This demo may be able to run in Windows 10/11 properly, but someone with more knowledge than I on graphics and wrappers will probably need to play with it further. A virtual machine is most likely your answer for now. Cheers.

Side note: I never knew the development history of the DMZG tech demo. If you go to that wiki site there is a full development timeline of how it evolved. Quite lengthy and something actually did come out of it years later, although quite different from the source material. Here's a game trailer of the cancelled game Exod Intervention which eventually became Xotic.

Hi! If you like tech demos/graphics demos of ~2000, please also have a look at The Chronicles of Jaruu Tenk.
It's not a game/demo, but more of an screensaver/tamagotchi kind of thing.
The story unfolds over time, but the characters are interactive.

Edit:

Hi, yes, in principle. It's just me thinking out loud, though.

If the games use DirectX 7 Runtime or lower,
chances are good they can be run in software rendering or in partial hardware/software rendering on older Windows.

That means that PCem/86Box with an Direct 3D 5/6/7 capable graphics card and Windows 98SE-XP can be used.

If you're running Virtualbox 7.x and Windows 98SE, you can run SoftGPU.
It will emulate a 3D graphics card in software.
Bonus: With installing KernelEx, gdiplus.dll and unicows.dll good old Windows 98SE will be upgraded to Windows XP/Vista level in terms of application compatibility.

Then there's WINE.. You can run a copy of Linux on Windows 10/11, which then runs WINE.
Either by using WSL or by using an dedicated VM..

Or use Boxedwine, it's a WINE in a box (has minimal Linux to run it).

Another idea is to run a copy of Windows 8.x in a random VM.
Windows 8 had introduced a new software render, which can run Aero Glass in software.
That was meant to get rid of "Vista Basic" look. Maybe it also helps for applications.

Also possible is to run Windows XP in Vmware.
Using older Guest Additions, the 3D support might be still available.

For OpenGL, there's Mesa3D and some other software renderers AFAIK.

Edit: There's also a hardware solution. Have a look at Thin Clients.
The slightly older ones have good Windows 98SE/XP support.
Windows 98SE runs easier off CF cards, since it doesn't check for removable media bit.
It also runs fine below 256 MB of RAM, which matches the little RAM modules installed as default.

Just don't forget to check graphics chips. Something like an ATI Rage (Direct3D 6?) can be expected, but be careful with video memory.
It might be that the memory installed is sufficient for 640x480 only (in 3D).
So additional memory has to be installed, maybe. That's the downside with these little guys..

Edit: That's one of my thin clients..
