First, I apologize if this post is in the wrong section. It seems this forum layout is kind of like dos. it takes a certain type of thinking to understand its intricacies. Unfortunately, I am not such a person. My first computer ran win 95. Therefore about half of my games, or rather half of the games i wanted to play, ran in dos. or would have, had I the know-how to get more than a handful of them to work.

So dosbox, and D-Fend Reloaded have been a godsend to me. however, i have one small problem, specifically with Dungeon Hack, but in the future im sure it will become a more general problem.

There are two issues.

1st. I am trying to add the cheat command to my dungeon hack profile. (the "set aesop_diag=1" line.)
I can start a dosbox prompt and enter this in manually, and i realize that its only a single small line of text, but I would like to know if there is a way in D-fend Reloaded to accomplish this automatically.
I have attempted adding it to the main profile page (sorry if i get the correct names wrong, im typing this from the car, on a phone). The field right underneath where the game's .exe file is listed. however that just gives me an error message. I am assuming that this is because that line is for parameters added to the exe command.
I am unsure where to place the command in the profiler. I have even opened the config file and added the line numerous times and saved, both with the game open and not, and with the d-fend reloaded front-end open and not, but no matter what i do, the config file reverts back to default, removing my added command. I have even opened it under "run as admin" in win 7 (which i am using) but the results are the same.

if anyone can help me, i would greatly appreciate it.

2nd.
I am hosting an "Emulation Station" for members of my order in the android game, Rage of Bahamut. I am Posting pre-set versions of dosbox for both PC and Android, along with all the tools they need to get them running (ie, the hacker's keyboard, etc.), in the hopes that even the non-technical minded, short attention span types will be able to enjoy some great games.
Right now my setups include the config files for games, but not the games themselves. My question was, If I only include abandonware/and/or homebrew games, is it still not appropriate to include games WITH an emulator? (also, im not sure if dosbox falls under the same emulation standards of mame and console emu's)
I want to make the install as painless as possible for them, with no room for them to mess it up. But I also do not want to do anything illegal. I encourage all of them to buy some games from gog, and other sites that have been re-releasing dos games.
I can always set up the games in a folder that they can drag and drop onto their SD card, once they have my preset version of dosbox installed, but as long as there is nothing wrong with it, it would be extremely helpful to include the pre-set dosbox WITH the games. But again, I don't want to do anything wrong. I'm well aware of the emulator laws in regard to consoles, SNES, Genesis, NEO-GEO, MAME, etc. But with dosbox, and abandonware, my knowledge is somewhat lacking.

If you can help me with information regarding either of these two issues, please let me know.

You can feel free to email me at (distorted to avoid being bot-spammed)
volyren............at...............g.com (insert mail after g, before com.)

and i will check the notify when a response.... option when posting this, so either way is fine.

and again, if this is in the wrong spot, you have my apologies, and express permission to move it to whatever forum you feel it belongs in.

thanks in advance.
you guys have helped me plenty over the years even before i signed up.

Take care,

Josh Hines (Volyren Nightsong)

1. I am not using a frontend but perhaps the frontend allows changing the autoexec setting? This should allow just plain lines that gets executed. If there is nothing like that just make a batch file, just a textfile, enter two lines. First the set ... and then the exe name of dungeon hack. Name this batch file 'cheat.bat' and in dfend use this as game exe instead of the dungeon hack one.
I hope you understand what I mean 😉

2. Abandonware is a no go since even though it sounds nice it is still illegal to hand out copyrighted games. People not using the original files don't get any help here.

thanks, ill try that txt file idea.
and i think im being misunderstood on the abandonware.
i dont mean the games you get from those various sites, i mean games that have been freely released, such as bards tale 1 and betrayal at krondor.
i know about the loophole in laws regarding warez. while it is technically illegal, the law has no legal framework for prosecuting individuals. (no sentencing guidelines, no nothing.)
HOWEVER. and this is the big thing to understand. Everything IS in place to prosecute organizations, businesses and networks for the distribution of those files.
and even though my forum is through proboards, i fall under the liability clause since i set up the account. i can link, give instructions, even go so far as step by step, showing how to get around whatever copyright protection exists on any game, BUT the moment i host a single file, i become liable, and am open to prosecution. (thats how these fileplanet and torrent sites get away with it).
i have no intention of posting anything for download that im not 100% sure has been freely distributed.
my question was actually if anyone knew whether or not there was some technicality or other that prevented the inclusion of games WITH an emulator. (free domain games, mind you, that ANYONE can legally distribute like the two mentioned above)
I just remember reading the laws a few years ago, and that was something that stuck out to me. that no ROM could be included with an emulator in the same package.
my confusion arises from the fact that DOS Box is in a somewhat grey area in emulation, and the games are in their original format, not roms.
can you kind of understand my quandary?
I just have no idea where to go to find the answer to that question.

There is no grey area with DOSBox. DOSBox is 100% legit. You can package DOSBox with whatever you like as long as you abide by the GPL.

But saying that obviously the DOSBox devs don't look to kindly on people packaging DOSBox with abandonwarez.

Games that have been released as freeware usually have stipulations as well such as only being allowed to download from the original website and not for distribution.

The only way to legally package those games would be to contact the current publisher for permission and get it in writing. (Don't just assume) Have fun.

Just because the games aren't in a single container as Roms are doesn't make it much different to other emulators. Roms aren't much legal either. Except for some obscure demo scene stuff you can't just give away the roms, legally.
No one can prevent you and there may not be anyone looking to get you for giving away games to friends. But it's not legal
