It works well with SoundBlasters as long as you don't use it simultanous together with digital sound effects or you use a noisy card like CT1740 or CT1750 with a non buggy DSP 😉
I would recommend a quiet card for the DB50XG. The Yamaha YMF-719 based cards come to my mind as well as Crystal based cards, they are also very quiet and have good SB Pro compatibility. But OPTi based cards are also very good "mothers" for the daughterboards. OPTi 929 (found on Terratec Maestro 32 and others) was good, OPTi 930/931 even better. Last but not least ESS AudioDrive cards based on ES1688 (with extra FM chip) or ES1868/1869 (with very good sounding integrated FM circuits called "ESFM") are good alternatives, too.
There are also cards from CMI, the 8330 or Avance Logic ALS100, 100+, 120, 120+ cards providing SB16 compatibility, but these cards might have a distorted output.
2 card solutions are also possible if you really need SB16 hardware compatibility. You can use 1 SB16 for digital and another SB for MIDI.
Cheers,
Fabian

I've got my XG knock off card on a CT-3990 AWE32. They work pretty well together. Is there any other game besides Final Fantasy 7 that has native XG support? I love the sound on that thing!

I've used mine with ESS 1869 and Vortex 1/2. I don't like putting DBs on any Creative card because of the impact on signal quality.
I use mine with an Aztech Sound Galaxy Washington 16. It seems to work fine.
I use my DB50XG with a cheapo Dynex DX-SC51 sound card I got off ebay... AFAIK, it is the only modern sound card that still has a waveblaster header... modern meaning, it's PCI and has drivers that works with Windows 7... the DB50XG is so much larger, I had to zip tie it on... no place for the pegs to clip on! Uses a VIA Envy24 chip, and latest drivers just came out in February! Too bad it's a noisy card (for modern standards) though... oh well!
works great with DOSbox! 😁
If your machine has PCI cards there are Aureal Vertex 2 cards with wavetable headers. PCI cards are usually quieter and you can also just disable them by not loading the driver 😀
Handy if you have several cards installed.
the problem is, there are no drivers for 64-bit Windows with the Aureal cards... so how about NO scott?

W7 machines don't have ISA slots. So I doubt that's a problem for the OP 😀
you were talking about the Aureal Vertex 2 cards, which are PCI... there's no 64-bit windows drivers for it, in fact the XP drivers for it are bare bones crap.... why should I give a shit when support for it has been dead for 10 years?
I'll stick to my cheap piece of shit $10 via based dynex card, thank you
and besides, he made no mention of any specifics of which type of card and what kind of machine/os he needs it to work on.... you're simply assuming he will be using an ISA card, which is probably a good guess
but my reply was to your reply, which my point is, Aureal cards are a stupid idea today for anyone who uses a modern computer and just wants better MIDI from DOSbox... I know you can run them just fine with all the 32-bit windows released so far, but I actually use my computer for everything else, so I don't care about 32-bit windows, not especially since I have a 64-bit CPU, globs of RAM, and want to take full advantage of my hardware

The OP using an ISA system wasn't really an assumption, more an educated guess, seeing he is talking about a wavetable card and a Sound Blaster.
Now the OP needing to use his card on a Windows 7 64 bit machine, now THAT is an assumption. One made by you 😀
And there no need to swear all the time.
what assumption? it's only you who is insinuating that I'm assuming he wants to use PCI and Windows 7... all I did was post that I use my DB50XG with the Dynex on a modern machine running 7... everyone else have been posting what their setups are, you obviously missed the boat on that one... no where did I say he needs to be using this setup, all I did was provided information that it WORKS... get with the program!
if your post regarding the Aureal cards was directed at the OP, then you should've quoted his post... your post showed up directly below mine, it meant to me that it was in response to my post, especially since you made mention about lower noise, further cementing the idea that your post was direct at me, not the OP
all I did was post that I use my DB50XG with the Dynex on a modern machine running 7.
And I posted my setup.

That's how forums work DOH! Had it been aimed at you I would have quoted.
I'll be using it in MS-DOS 6.22. My mobo has a mix of ISA and PCI slots.
