I know gog has but I'd rather get the original box and all. So there are two versions, the 3.5 floppy or the CDROM version. Are there any differences?

Does the CDROM version still allow for use of a General Midi sound card for music or does it force you to use CD audio tracks?

Descent CD-ROM doesn't have CD tracks at all. IIRC, CD tracks were only made for the Macintosh and Playstation versions. They aren't there for DOS.

The sequel does though, and gives you an option to choose MIDI or redbook audio. The music is also completely different which is good if industrial is/isn't your preference.

Yea I'm going to bust it all out on DOS 6.0. Yea I got a CH flightstick ready for action. If it has General MIDI, I plan to pipe it to my Yamaha MU128 sound module.

By the way, anybody know which sound module the soundtrack was composed on? Was it sc-55 or Yamaha XG?

Not sure - but it sounds fantastic on either.

If you get stuck with a Version 1.5 CD-ROM and can't hear music after Level 7, this may be helpful:
