okay so i have kings quest 2 and i played it in both scumm vm and dosbox. i like dosbox more because it can play more games than scumm but "kq2" sounded so much better in scummvm. i was wondering how to get it to play the same way in dosbox? ive downloaded a multitude of sound drivers for dosbox including roland mt 32. i have also downloaded a version of dosbox that will run mt32. is there something i did not set up right?

the difference i noticed is in the title screen the music sounds much cleaner and seems to have more layers in scummvm.
also at the beginning of the game when standing next to the beach you can hear the waves crashing on the rocks in scumm but not dosbox please help

The machine=tandy setting in DOSBox should produce similar music.

Neither SCUMMVM nor DOSBox belong to the DOS section.

awesome that got it to work thanks.
Do you know of any way to get this running through d-fend though?
It seems the tandy setting gets shut off or something

also i noticed that while the music had changed after setting to tandy, the soundd effects during the copyright screen are still missing. i thnk it might have something to do with adlib?

Tandy sound isn't particularly fond of Sound Blaster...so turn Sound Blaster off in your .conf file...
You need to create a proper profile with D-Fend (hopefully Reloaded...the other is ANCIENT) to use machine Tandy, turn off Sound Blaster, etc.

do i need to do that in the conf file of dosbox or d-fend reloaded? or both?
in the dosbox conf there isnt an option to enable or disable soundblaster: sbtype=sb16
sbbase=220
irq=7
dma=1
hdma=5
sbmixer=false
oplmode=opl3
oplemu=default
oplrate=22050
hardwarebase=220
goldplay=false

also when i try to change the setting of the game profile in d-fend i have to have disney sounds enabled or the screen goes black.
sorry i am pretty new to this

thanks for the advice

i tried adding sblaster=false to the dosbox conf but nothing has changed. i can tell that the machine=tandy setting worked, but i still cannot hear other sound effects

wow weird so i checked over the entire conf file and noticed that machine wasnt set to tandy but to svga_s3 and that when I turn off tandy under pcspeaker the game still sounds the same. so i guess i do not need tandy to have it sound this way. does this mean that i do not need to change soundblaster to get the sound effects working?

EDIT! for some reason i cant delete earlier posts.

EDIT EDIT
Okay so i was confused between the two games im trying in DOSBox : monkey island 2 and Kings Quest 2. For KQ2 to have the better music and sound fx i need machine=tandy to be set however for Monkey 2 it says that i need a graphics card to play, but the machine=tandy is still set. is there a setting that will work for both and at the same time play the soud fx in Monkey 2 that are missing?

okay sorry for all the posts
so i finally have kings quest 2 profile set right in d-fend
now im only having trouble with monkey island 2. through dosbox it runs perfectly except for some missing sound fx with this conf file. I try to set it up the same way in the d-fend profile but when i turn off disney the game doesnt load. why does it work fine in dosbox but not through d-fend?

Hi there!

Check out my 2h GOGcom DOSBox tweaking tutorial in my signature.

It does feature Space Quest and explains the whole thing with Tandy and so on 😀

ScummVM is unique as it doesn't emulate a machine, but is replaced the interpreter (think of it as the game engine). So it can often do things not possible in other versions like combine the best graphics of one system with the best sound of another.

The "best" sound for these old games (King Quest 2) is on the Apple II GS. It has a sound chip from Ensoniq and it shows.

Space Quest 1 even has some digital speech at the beginning of the game!

As Dominus pointed out, use normal DOSBox. It has handled AGI games perfectly for years, now.

Of course without an Apple II GS copy of the game, ScummVM can only make the PC square wave sounds sound like an electric piano played with just three fingers.

The SCI version does, not the AGI version, and then only with the SNDBLAST.DRV driver or the fan made GMBLAST.DRV. Space Quest 3 also has digital speech at the beginning using the NRS SNDBLAST.DRV driver.

Im actually using d-fend to run my games in another front-end called hyperspin. because i have both dos and windows games i need d-fend to be able to run the games. all i need to know now is how to set up the profile for monkey island 2 correctly. When set up automatically the sound doesnt even work. There is only crackling every now and then. im interested in knowing how to set it up just in case there are other games with the same issue

Sorry I wasn't clear enough, I meant the Apple II GS version of course 😀

Right when Roger comes out of the storage cabinet there is a digital recording being played!

D-Fend is a front-end which makes changes to config files. All the switches refer to settings in the config file so I still highly recommend watching my tutorial as it explains all the important settings 😀

hey Mau1wurf1977 i have watched some of your videos but the thing is the game plays great when i open it through DOSBox but somehow d-fend screws up the sound even with the same settings. lastly, there are some sound effects missing even when played in dosbox.
I just need to know specifically what options need to be turned on or off
