You can view the config files from within D-Fend reloaded. Maybe that helps you track down the issue.

the other thing is, DOSBox will play the game like it played on a real DOS machine or Tandy. Nothing more, nothing less.

ScummVM is an interpreter and often does things like enabling sounds that only play on the Amiga or Apple.

So never ever take ScummVM as reference for comparing anything.

Different sound resources in the Apple II GS AGI games than the PC. If you go to http://www.virtualapple.org/ you can hear the what the Apple II GS AGI games sounded like. Particularly, note the KQ1 theme. Otherwise, you are right that you can get combinations that are not normally available at the same time, but the resources still have to be there. For example, ScummVM allows KQ6CD to use DOS GM music (instead of Windows MIDI Mapper) with the Windows high res dialog images, but the game contains both DOS and Windows resources.

That website is pretty slick 😀

Indeed it is. You might have also noticed that the Apple AGI games had mouse support, too. This is one other thing that ScummVM can fake in the PC AGI games, but it was native in the Apple AGI games. There are no walk paths, though, so I don't find it that usable. ScummVM has its uses, but in general, I much prefer DOSBox with machine=tandy over ScummVM for the AGI games, which is why I use DOSBox with my AGI installers.

hey guys thanks for all the info but i think i confused everyone. thanks to the info i have kq2 working perfectly.
The only game not working is monkey island 2. It works NEARLY perfectly when i open it through dosbox, but no sound at all when running through d-fend. I have checked the config files and they seem exactly the same so i dont know whats going on.
LASTLY, when i said NEARLY it means that all the sounds work except for some fx at the very beginning of the game during the copyright protection. im not sure if any others are missing because i havent played the whole game in both scumm, where the sounds are heard, and dosbox

No one is confused. You have to expect classic game aficionados to be easily sidetracked with tangential discussions. As to MI2, remember that using DOSBox you must also configure the games as well. For the LA games, this was done via a command line option or a batch file. I believe that for SoundBlaster you had to use the "s" switch. Check the game's folder for a batch file and be sure that it has the "s" switch for digital sounds.

Yes MONKEY2.EXE S will launch it in Sound Blaster mode.

MONKEY2 A in adlib mode, MONKEY2 R in Roland mode and can't remember what the PC speaker was 😀

Though if there is a SET BLASTER environment variable I believe it automatically does this.

Easy check is the spitting sound or the yelling when you use the voodoo doll on Largo Le Grande.

Its cool collector totally understandable haha but yah i checked the game file folder and do not see a .bat file. also i have tried almost every option in d-fend reloaded to get the sound working but still nothing. however the game does play fine when i run it through dosbox without d-fend. what could be going wrong that the sound works in dosbox but not d-fend

on weird thing that happens through d-fend is that the game will not load and in fact causes it to freeze when disney sounds is unchecked. yet in the dosbox config file disney is off and the game works fine

I believe that the game defaults to Roland if no switch is set, which won't have the SB digital sound effects and the music will sound off without an MT-32. Either set the command to start the game to MONKEY2 S or make a bat file with that in it and start the game with it.

I am not sure what to make of the Defend Reloaded issue. Take a look at the conf file that it generates.

sorry im pretty new to all of this and dont really know how to set that command and def not how to create that bat file. any way you could explain it out a little more?

do you know of maybe a better or different frontend for dosbox?
that could make things easier if d-fend just isnt working right.

another thing is in d-fend when i try to set the midi device to mt-32 itll load dosbox twice before loading the game. the dosbox screen loads thens shuts down then loads again

Paste

MONKEY2 S

into Notepad and save it as MI.BAT in the game's directory. Start the game in DOSBox with MI2.BAT instead of MONKEY2.EXE

I think it's time you post the conf file that you use for Monkey Island 2 😀

Might help us get to the bottom of this.

PS: I still believe my videos will help you.

also, not sure if this helps, there are ims files in the monkey 2 game folder for each of the soundcards... sblaster, roland, adlib. these files are only found in this game folder and none of my other games. why is that?

Monkey 2 would be reverting to 3000 cycles with core, cputype and cycles set to auto, so speed is not an issue. I have not heard of LA games having speed issues with SoundBlaster the way that some Sierra SB drivers do. The way they failed was due to the detection routine Sierra used with the early SCI1 games.

@trebrick, try using stock DOSBox 0.74. It has been a while since I have tried one of ykhwong's build, so I cannot say if that is the issue, but generally you want to try the official build before asking for help on VOGONS. While the experimental builds an include some nice features that are not in the official build, they can also lead to different results. If you need help with one of the experimental builds, it best to contact the author of that build.

If you still have trouble with the official 0.74, post your dosbox.conf for it.
